Kenmore City Council unanimously supports an individual’s right to reproductive healthcare, including abortion, and marriage equality

Kenmore, WA - On June 27, 2022, the Kenmore City Council unanimously passed a Resolution in Support of codifying comprehensive Reproductive Healthcare, including abortion, and Marriage Equality in the Washington State and United States Constitutions. The Resolution was brought forward by Kenmore Deputy Mayor Melanie O'Cain in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

The resolution expresses the City Council's official position in support of amendments to the Washington State and United States Constitutions that would aim to pass state and federal laws that would affirm a pregnant person’s right to access an abortion without undue interference.

On June 24, 2022, the Supreme Court of the United States struck down Roe v. Wade siting the Due Process Clause and Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment do not apply to an individual’s right to safe and legal abortions. In addition, on June 26, 2015 the Supreme Court of the United States ruled in Obergefell v. Hodges that the fundamental right to marry is guaranteed to same-sex couples by both the Due Process Clause and the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution.

The resolution states that the Supreme Court interpretation of the 14th Amendment is a threat to marriage equality and the Kenmore City Council supports an individual’s right to reproductive healthcare, including abortion, and marriage equality. In addition, the resolution recognizes that transgender, nonbinary, and gender expansive people also get pregnant and require abortion care, and that Washington State Law should reflect the most inclusive understanding of who needs abortions and be updated with gender neutral language.

“The Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade rejected over 50 years of legal precedence that prevented government interference in our most personal life decisions,” said Deputy Mayor O’Cain. “It also opened the door to limiting other rights, including who we can marry. I am thankful our City Council moved with urgency and unanimously approved a resolution in favor of codifying comprehensive reproductive healthcare and marriage equality.”

A copy of the final resolution will be sent to the Washington State Legislature and the White House.
