The Kenmore Top 4: June 17, 2022

Kenmore City Council proclaimed June 19, 2022 as Juneteenth in Kenmore. Juneteenth is the oldest known public celebration of the end of slavery in the United States and commemorates African American freedom. 4Culture has compiled a great list of resources and local events that celebrate Juneteenth by recognizing African American achievements, acknowledging our collective history, and honoring Black voices. Kenmore City Hall will be closed on Monday, June 20 in observance of Juneteenth.

Pride Month in Kenmore continues! Pride Month is a celebration of the contributions made by LGBTQIA+ individuals in our community and throughout the nation. This year, all are invited to march with Kenmore in the Seattle Pride Parade on June 26. Advanced registration is required, so sign up today. Looking for something closer to home? This week, the Kenmore City Council adopted the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Transition Plan. The ADA Transition Plan identifies where and why sidewalk, curb ramps, and crosswalks do not meet federal accessibility guidelines and prioritizes which locations get fixed first. Kenmore businesses are encouraged to participate in the free Safe Place program, a partnership between the police, business community, and schools that aims to create safe locations for individuals to visit if they feel they have been a victim of a hate crime (which are often unreported). Organizations that participate place an easily recognizable decal at their entrances, which is a signal for victims that the location will call 911 and provide a safe place to stay until the police arrive.
