With the cost of doing business rising faster than projected operating revenues, the City Council directed a Financial Sustainability Plan process in 2020. The City appointed a task force of Kenmore residents and conducted a community engagement process to create a plan for the City that would provide financial sustainability for the foreseeable horizon. Based on input from the community, the plan resulted in a combination of reductions in expenditures and new revenues to make sure the City maintains healthy fund balances. The steps to be taken in the adopted Financial Sustainability Plan are to be phased in over multiple years. The plan calls for one of those steps, a new Cable TV utility tax of 6%, to begin in the second half of this year. The first reading of the cable TV utility tax will be included in the June 21 City Council meeting agenda, and adoption is scheduled for the July 11 City Council meeting.
Log Boom Park Waterfront Access & Viewing Project:
We are almost done! Staff anticipates the project will be complete and open to the public at end of June as planned. Artist Jen Dixon recently installed the “Flume” artwork and the summer float has been attached to the pier for use. We are eager to open the park to the public by the end of this month and show off the many new amenities for all to enjoy

Waterfront & Natural Open Space Access Project at Squire’s Landing Park (renamed ƛ' a x̌w a d i s, and pronounced Tl' awh-ah-dees):
With most underground utility work almost complete, work progresses above ground. Visual changes will be more apparent throughout the site, such as the boardwalk being installed with support piles cut to size, frames and grating added. The restroom building will be delivered for installation this month. Next month, the bridges will arrive to cross Swamp Creek and the lagoon.
On June 13, Kenmore City Council proclaimed June 19th, 2022 as Juneteenth in Kenmore. Juneteenth is the oldest known public celebration of the end of slavery in the United States and commemorates African American freedom, achievements and successes gained through education and opportunity. Kenmore residents are encouraged to observe Juneteenth in a thoughtful way that acknowledges our collective history, advances racial justice, and honors Black voices. 4Culture has compiled a great list of resources and events to help us celebrate Juneteenth. This year, Kenmore City Hall will be closed on Monday, June 20 in observance of Juneteenth.

On June 13, the Kenmore City Council adopted the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Transition Plan. This plan was created using input gathered from the public, including individuals in the disability community, and evaluation by staff of the pedestrian accessibility of Kenmore public sidewalks, curb ramps, and crosswalks (collectively called “facilities”). The ADA Transition Plan identifies where and why sidewalk, curb ramps, and crosswalks do not meet federal accessibility guidelines, assesses the cost to bring those locations into compliance with the guidelines, and prioritizes which locations get fixed first. The ADA Transition Plan can be found on the City’s website www.kenmorewa.gov/ADA.

Storing firearms locked up is among the best ways to prevent kids from getting hurt with firearms, youth and adults in crisis from using a family firearm, and to prevent firearms from being stolen and misused by others. With the help of Project ChildSafe, the Kenmore Police Department has FREE gun cable locks available at City Hall. What is a cable lock? It is a device that blocks the chamber to prevent a gun from being fired. Kenmore residents can pick up their free lock during business hours in the lobby. While you are there, grab a free locking prescription drug bag too! For more info on firearms in King County: www.kingcounty.gov/firearms
Changes Coming on SR522/Bothell Way
At the City’s request, Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is in the process of removing the westbound left turn lane into the businesses along the south side of SR522 just west of 61st Ave NE. Westbound drivers wishing to access the businesses along this stretch of SR522 will need to proceed to Ballinger Way in Lake Forest Park and make a u-turn at the signal. Historically, this left turn has resulted in multiple accidents, and this change is being made to improve safety.
New Speed Limits on 84th Ave NE
New 30 MPH speed limit signs are being installed to replace the 35 MPH speed limit signs on 84th Ave NE south of Simonds Road. Temporary “Traffic Revision Ahead” signs and high-visibility orange diamonds and/or flags will also be installed to alert drivers to the change. These speed limit changes are part of an overall strategy to improve safety by encouraging lower travel speeds. As an added bonus, Kirkland is lowering the speed limit on their section of 84th Ave NE, too, and Kenmore, King County, and Kirkland are all coordinating a simultaneous change to take place in early July. The Kenmore City Council resolution to enable this change was approved at the June 13th council meeting.
