Kenmore receives Municipal Excellence Award for American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) response

Kenmore, WAThe Association of Washington Cities (AWC) recently announced that the City of Kenmore was awarded a Municipal Excellence Award for its American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) response. The City of Kenmore is one of five cities honored this year for putting creative ideas to use for their community. The AWC will present this award to the City of Kenmore at the AWC’s annual conference later this month.

“This year’s winning projects highlight just a few of the ways that Washington cities are leading with innovation and resilience to solve a diverse range of challenges, including affordable housing, public health, and economic recovery,” said Alicia Seegers Martinelli, AWC Interim CEO.

Each year, AWC’s Municipal Excellence Awards provide ideas and inspiration to communities around the state, showcasing successes that can be emulated in other cities. The City of Kenmore’s American Rescue Plan Act response has included direct cash assistance to residents in need, funds for affordable housing development, business assistance, and an innovative public engagement process to seek input as the City prioritized and planned future ARPA programming. Based on community input, the City will launch new ARPA programs in 2022 and 2023. The AWC specifically called out Kenmore’s direct cash assistance program, Kenmore Cares, and its community engagement efforts in announcing the award.

“This AWC award is a positive reflection on our entire community,” Mayor Nigel Herbig said. “I’d like to thank my colleagues on the City Council for their vision and leadership as well as Kenmore City staff and our partners for being creative and innovative in administering the ARPA funding for our community.”

Stephanie Lucash, Kenmore’s Assistant City Manager and ARPA Administrator said, “It has been a privilege to be part of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make a positive impact in our community. A special thanks to our ARPA team members Janet Quinn, Garrett Oppenheim, Nancy Meehan and Lauren Chomiak, and our partners: Northshore Schools Foundation on our direct cash assistance program; Balancing Act on our community engagement efforts; Diversity, Equity and Inclusion consultant Chanin Kelly-Rae on our community listening session to gather ARPA project ideas; and A Regional Coalition for Housing, Enterprise Community Partners and Plymouth Housing Group on our affordable housing work. All these individuals and groups have been instrumental in our success.”

The City of Kenmore, along with the four other 2022 Municipal Excellence Award recipients, will be recognized at AWC’s Annual Conference on June 23, 2022. This is Kenmore's seventh AWC Municipal Excellence Award, which is open each year to any Washington city or town and recognizes innovative city projects that significantly improve the quality of life for their communities.
