June 2022 is proclaimed Pride Month in Kenmore

Kenmore, WA - At the May 23 meeting, the Kenmore City Council proclaimed June 2022 as Pride Month in Kenmore. Pride Month is celebrated every June to recognize and celebrate the LGBTQIA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (or Questioning), Intersex, and Asexual) communities around the U.S.

This year, the Progress Pride Flag will fly high for the month of June at City Hall, which incorporates the Transgender Pride Flag and includes black and brown stripes to represent marginalized LGBTQIA+ communities of color, community members lost to HIV/AIDS, and those living with AIDS. The community is invited to attend a Pride Flag Raising Ceremony at 8:30am at City Hall on Wednesday, June 1.

The proclamation was accepted by Jenny Sayward from Northshore Pride, who moved to Kenmore with her partner in 2010 before same sex marriage was fully legal. Sayward said “Because the people of Kenmore and surrounding areas welcomed us, we have been able to enjoy participating in various parts of this community, not just as lesbians advocating for inclusion, but as full human beings with a lot more to offer.”

The first Pride observance was held in June 1970 in New York City, one year after gay and transgender community members demonstrated against persistent harassment by the New York Police Department at the Stonewall Inn. Since then, communities throughout the country host Pride events and other observances. In the decades since, the struggle for equality has seen landmark ballot measures, legislation and court decisions. They include the Washington State Law Against Discrimination as amended in 2006, Washington Legislation ESSB 6239 legalizing same sex marriage and the landmark 2015 US Supreme Court decision on marriage equality.

The City of Kenmore recognizes the fight for equality and dignity for all individuals under the law continues, and reaffirms its commitment to being a safe, inclusive, and welcoming city for all people.
