Community Survey Responses
In July, we mailed postcards to every household in Kenmore inviting residents to participate in a survey on the Comprehensive Plan update. The purpose of the survey was to help us frame the future and develop a public participation program that will involve Kenmore residents in important discussions about land use and housing. 1,158 Kenmore residents responded to the survey. You can view a summary of the survey results on our website, including highlights of what we heard.
Let’s Talk About Housing
Beginning on September 21, the Planning Commission will consider “Missing Middle” housing as one way Kenmore can play a role in addressing the regional need to provide more starter homes and smaller dwellings besides apartments in larger apartment buildings. “Missing Middle” housing refers to housing that is more dense than neighborhoods with only detached single-family homes and less dense than mid-rise apartments—for example, duplexes, triplexes, and cottage housing. These housing types are rarely built today but were standard dwellings in the past. A good description of how this kind of housing supports providing housing affordable to those making middle incomes and also encourages more diversity in our community can be found here. Hope to see you at the virtual Planning Commission meeting on September 21!

To prepare for the impacts of climate change, the City is transitioning into Phase Two of the climate action planning process. The goal of this phase is to continue community engagement through the upcoming community-wide survey going live on September 22, 2021 as well as feedback from City Council to ensure that strategies and actions are tailored to the community, reflect local priorities and build upon existing efforts to help create a more resilient Kenmore. To date, the City has hosted a virtual community roundtable, conducted a community-wide survey, as well as interviews with City staff throughout the organization.

As of August 25, crews finished setting the last two of 20 over-the-water bridge girders. It takes four girders to build one bridge span, and the five spans will serve as the horizontal support structures for the new West bridge. Span 2 – second from the boat launch – is the longest span at 140 feet. Due to its size and location, Span 2 had to be moved using two cranes and required a full shut down of the East bridge overnight.
Now that the girders are in place, crews can begin building the bridge deck, which includes placing rebar and pouring the concrete roadway surface. While the bridge was originally scheduled to open to traffic by the end of October, weather delays, Covid delays, and unexpected conditions encountered during removal of the 1930s foundation piers, have potentially pushed the bridge’s anticipated opening to the end of this year.

On August 20, Kenmore Police joined the King County Sheriff's Office, Shoreline Police, and Lake Forest Park Police for the annual Special Olympics of Washington Torch Run along Bothell Way. For 40 years, the torch run has raised awareness and funding for Special Olympics all over the world. Locally, the annual statewide Torch Run traditionally precedes the state Spring Games and is the heart and soul of the Law Enforcement Torch Run Campaign. This is the most symbolic event with "Guardians of the Flame" carrying and presenting the Flame of Hope to start the Special Olympics. With the cancellation of the 2021 State Spring Games due to the pandemic, Special Olympics Washington, along with the support of hundreds of local law enforcement volunteers, still hosted the annual Torch Run in smaller groups, to continue raising funds and awareness.
