June 2021 is Pride Month in Kenmore!

Kenmore City Council proclaimed June 2021 as Pride Month in Kenmore. Pride Month is celebrated every June to recognize and celebrate the LGBTQIA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (or Questioning), Intersex, and Asexual) communities around the U.S. The first Pride observance was held in June 1970 in New York City, one year after gay and transgender community members demonstrated against persistent harassment by the NYPD at the Stonewall Inn.  Since then, communities throughout the country host Pride events and other observances.

In the decades since, the struggle for equality has seen landmark ballot measures, legislation and court decisions. They include the Washington State Law Against Discrimination as amended in 2006, Washington Legislation ESSB 6239 legalizing same sex marriage and the landmark 2015 US Supreme Court decision on marriage equality.

The Kenmore proclamation recognizes the fight for equality and dignity for all individuals under the law continues, and reaffirms Kenmore's commitment to being a safe, inclusive and welcoming city for all people. The Pride flag will fly at City Hall for the month of June. Find out more ways to participate in Pride month at www.kenmorewa.gov/dei.

The City of Kenmore is in the process of developing an ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) Transition Plan to guide when and where mobility improvements need be made within Kenmore. Staff has been conducting an inventory of current pedestrian facilities to find gaps in and barriers to accessibility. The development of a comprehensive ADA Transition Plan also needs feedback from community members just like you! To gather this feedback, the City is conducting an online survey to better understand your mobility experiences. Check out our webpage www.kenmoreada.com and see what this is all about and take the survey! You can also use the mapping function to identify specific areas of concern, just click on “Interactive Reporting” to map your concern.

DEI banner

Kenmore City Council and staff have been developing a framework to help understand issues of systemic racism facing our community. In November 2020, the City Council approved the 2021 timeline for creating this framework. Here are current DEI updates, and a look at next steps:

  • As approved by the 2021-2022 Kenmore City Budget, Human Resources Manager, Leonora Palaña, was hired and will manage diversity, equity and inclusion policy development; including overseeing a DEI consultant contract, plan implementation, and providing staff support to an DEI Task Force.
  • Interviews are being conducted for the selection of a consultant to guide us through the DEI process.
  • Once selected, the consultant and task force’s scope of work will include leading a community engagement process, understanding the most marginalized members of the community and their needs, and developing recommendations for DEI policies and programs for the City to implement.

Summer Reminders to Protect Local Waterways

Spring and Summer are a hot time for water pollution! Many warm weather activities have the potential to increase water pollution in local streams. Here’s how you can help protect local waterways and Puget Sound:

  • Practice Natural Yard Care and think twice before using pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers that can runoff into storm drains.
  • For at home car washes, wash on a permeable surface like grass or just take your vehicle to a commercial car wash. The toxic runoff from vehicles and tires that enters storm drains can kill aquatic life/salmon within hours of contact.
  • When taking your dog for walks during the nice weather, always pick up after them and throw the baggie in the garbage. Leaving dog poop on the ground contributes to bacterial pollution and dog poop is not compostable.
  • Home improvement and maintenance projects have the potential for water pollution. Contain all materials and reduce the risk of spills. When pressure washing, be sure to push wash water onto a permeable surface like grass to let it soak into the ground so that it doesn’t enter the storm drain.
