Recycling guide

Five Ways to Be More Environmentally Friendly This Holiday Season:

  1. Enjoy that Holiday latte, just remember, your cup should be Empty, Clean and Dry before you toss it in the recycling container.
  2. Shipping gifts? Reuse last year’s bubble wrap and foam packing, or try using shredded paper instead.
  3. When giving gifts, commit to reusing laminated bag, but it’s okay recycle the paper ones.
  4. After opening gifts, remember to recycle wrapping paper – even the sparkly stuff – but save or trash the ribbons and bows. And don’t forget, Styrofoam packaging is not recyclable. Reuse or trash it.
  5. If Santa brings you a new device, make sure your old phone or tablet does not get tossed in with the recycling.

    Holiday safety

    Enjoy a Safe Holiday Season

Holiday season is here: The time when families gather, parties are scheduled and travel times spike. Holiday safety is extremely important to consider in and outside of the home. By taking some basic precautions, you and your loved ones can remain safe and injury-free throughout the season.

    Candles and Fireplaces
The National Fire Protection Association reports that 12% of home candle fires occur in December.

    • Never leave burning candles unattended or sleep in a room with a lit candle
    • Keep candles out of children's reach
    • Make sure candles are on stable surfaces
    • Do not burn candles near trees, curtains or any other flammable items
    • Do not burn trees, wreaths or wrapping paper in the fireplace
    • Check and clean the chimney and fireplace area at least once a year

Traveling for the Holidays? Be Safe
Many people choose to travel during the holidays by automobile. Driving has the highest fatality rate of any major form of transportation. In 2014, alcohol-impaired fatalities represented 31% of the total traffic fatalities.

    • Use a designated driver to ensure guests make it home safely after a holiday party
    • Make sure every person in the vehicle is buckled up no matter how long or short the distance being traveled
    • Put the cell phone away; distracted driving causes one-quarter of all crashes
    • Make sure the vehicle is properly maintained, and keep an emergency kit with you
