Explore the Outdoors Safely
Paddle safe. Paddle smart. A message from the Washington State Parks Boating Program
Spring is great time to
enjoy being on the water in a canoe, kayak or stand up paddleboard—especially
with temperatures climbing to the low 90s this weekend in most of the state. If
you plan to hit the water, don’t let the warm temperatures fool you, the water
is still cold!
According to meteorologist
Ted Buehner of the National Weather
Service in Seattle, even with the rising temperatures this weekend,
waters in rivers, lakes and the Puget Sound will still be in the 40s to mid-50s
because of the snowmelt runoff. Later in the summer, you may notice some lake
temperatures climbing to near 70 degrees on the surface. However, temperatures
will be much colder under the surface and can easily cause hypothermia.
To make sure that everyone
has a safe and enjoyable time on the water this weekend and throughout the
year, the Washington State
Parks Boating Program encourages paddlers to follow these tips prior
to heading out:
Wear a properly fitted life jacket. Just #Wear It.
Be prepared. Check the marine weather, and
always plan for changing weather conditions.
Know your limits. If you don't feel comfortable with
the conditions and your skill level, return to shore.
Bring extra layers of clothing in a waterproof/dry bag.
Keep signaling devices (whistle, mirror, flares) in a
pocket of your life jacket.
Be seen. Dress for visibility. Wear a brightly colored
life jacket and paddling clothing so that others can see you on the water.
Never go out on the water under the influence of
alcohol or drugs.
City Council May Consider Bond Measure for “Walkways & Waterways” Projects
At the June 13 Council meeting, the Kenmore City Council will consider the adoption of a Bond Election Ordinance that would place a "Walkways and Waterways" bond measure on the November 8, 2016 ballot. A bond measure requires 60% voter approval. The City Council regular meeting starts at 7 p.m. in the Kenmore City Hall Council Chambers. The Council meeting agenda with details on the bond measure will be available online at www.kenmorewa.gov/council.
The list of "Walkways & Waterways" projects below are the result of a public outreach initiative by the City known as Imagine Kenmore. This initiative began last summer and included a number of public meetings, online interactive methods, and two randomized phone surveys to solicit public input on priorities for pedestrian and bicycle safety as well as park improvements.
The following projects were selected after extensive public input over the last nine months:
68th Ave NE: Sidewalk and bike lane construction between downtown Kenmore (NE 182nd Street) to the northern city limit (Snohomish County Line)
Juanita Drive: Grant match funding for sidewalk and bike lane construction from NE 170th Street (Simonds Road) to the southern city limit (Kirkland border)
Log Boom Park: Lakefront, pathway, and viewpoint improvements
Rhododendron Park: New boardwalk and trail connecting the playfield to the waterfront and future dock
Squire’s Landing Park: New boardwalk and trails, open space enhancements, and water access improvements
