IPS Works newsletter highlights how Individual Placement and Support (IPS) supervisors help people succeed in recovery

IPS supervisors

Did you know that IPS is international? Washington State joined the International IPS learning community in 2015, and as a participant, we get to hear about IPS around the globe. Please check out this article from IPS international partners. IPS supervisors’ help people in recovery succeed in our state and around the globe. Recently, two programs shared success stories in their quarterly outcomes.

Marius Kirkeng, IPS Supervisor, Fredrikstad, Norway

I recently helped a job seeker follow up on a job application in person. He wanted to present some of his strengths to the hiring manager. My role was to be supportive and help him answer questions, if needed. My client introduced me as his mentor.

We didn’t have an appointment, but we waited until the manager was done helping customers before we introduced ourselves. My client explained that he was a job seeker and said that he had already submitted a job application. He followed up with the sentence: “I really want to work right here” (as we had practiced).

The manager followed up with the question: “Why here?” and “Do you have any experience?” My client explained how he helped out in his hockey club as a salesman in a booth and had experience in selling hot dogs, popcorn, and soda to many supporters in the last year. He described serving excited sports fans, and how he often had to work extra hard if a colleague did not report to work. And he said that he wanted a part-time job near the bus station so that he could easily travel home, and to school, and hockey practice.

The manager’s response was positive. He had not checked the submitted application, but he said, “Perfect timing!” Then the manager offered my client the opportunity to come back later that evening and work beside him as a type of extended interview.

When I helped a young job seeker follow up on an application in person, the employer was impressed saying, “I much prefer to hire candidates that show initiative to come in and speak with me, rather than applying online."

State surplus for affordable housing

Each year the Department of Commerce works with designated state agencies to provide an annual inventory report of state-owned, real property. The goal of the report is to encourage developers to use surplus property for the development of affordable housing. You can read the report on the commerce website.
