Health Care Authority announces RFP to expand value-based, bundled care delivery

The Washington State Health Care Authority (HCA) has released a request for proposals (RFP) to expand its Centers of Excellence services and bundled payment programs. The RFP seeks a bundled episode of care for spinal fusion.

Bundled payments for clinical episodes of care are when we pay one sum for the entire range of care, from pre-surgical visit to surgery and discharge. Bundled payments are a key strategy for HCA's move toward value-based purchasing.

The spinal fusion bundle is HCA’s second bundled episode of care. In 2016, the agency contracted with Virginia Mason as a Center of Excellence for hip and knee replacements.
