We Stand with the Somali Community
Background
The Office of Equity used to release statements in the midst of situations or actions that were contrary to our values of human dignity, Ubuntu, and love. In 2026, we feel called to begin this practice again. We have heard that people need their government to see them; people are asking their government to affirm their humanity; people want their government to acknowledge their pain. Our Office can and must meet these needs. Below is our first statement and it is just the beginning. We are in solidarity with all people in pain.
Washington State Office of Equity Statement in Support of the Somali Community
The Washington State Office of Equity exists within the Office of the Governor to change the way government functions so that every person has access to opportunities and resources (RCW 43.06D). We believe in a future that affirms the dignity and humanity of every person in Washington. We believe you matter and you belong. Your value is not tied to what you do or what you accomplish. It is not tied to your title or your bank account. Your value exists purely because you do.
“Human rights are inherent to us all, regardless of nationality, sex, national or ethnic origin, color, religion, language, or any other status…”(United Nations). As the Office of Equity, we are committed to and in solidarity with the Somali community and with childcare providers, all of whom deserve safety, dignity, and respect. The Somali community and childcare providers are an essential part of our ecosystem, contributing care, stability, and connection for families across Washington State.
Harassment, intimidation, and unsubstantiated accusations have no place in our state and at no time, should any human considered to be disposable or “garbage.” If you have experienced or witnessed a hate crime or bias incident, we encourage you to report it here. You may also want to view Washington State Attorney General Nick Brown's full statement “in response to harassment and unsubstantiated claims of fraud targeted at daycares run by Somalis in Washington”.
To our Somali community: know that you are not alone. We are working towards a Washington where you can feel safe, supported, and able to thrive. Our values call us to uphold dignity, respect and justice for all. We encourage community connection and mutual care during this time. The Washington State Office of Equity remains committed to a Washington for All.
