What Would You Do With Found Money?
The Department of Revenue administers Washington’s unclaimed property program as a free public service. More than $1 billion in unclaimed property has been turned over to DOR since 1955. In 2020, they received property worth more than $185 million and returned $74 million of the unclaimed property received to its rightful owners.
Unclaimed property includes:
- Bank accounts.
- Insurance proceeds.
- Stocks, bonds, and mutual funds.
- Safe deposit box contents.
- Utility and phone company deposits.
- Uncashed checks, such as payroll, insurance payments, or travelers checks.
- Customer/patient credits.

WA Cares: Start Collecting Premiums July 1st for Q3
Employers begin deducting premiums from employees’ wages for the WA Cares Fund on July 1, 2023. WA Cares is the state’s new long-term care insurance program, funded entirely by worker contributions. There isn’t an employer premium for WA Cares.
At the beginning of the third quarter, you will collect WA Cares premiums from your employees much like you do now for Paid Leave — they have updated the Paid Leave reporting system so you can report for both programs at the same time
Employers can’t retroactively deduct premiums. Any employers who don’t deduct premiums from contributing employees will have to pay the premiums themselves during quarterly reporting.

Do you have an Accident Prevention Program (APP)?
The lack of a written Accident Prevention Program (APP) is still one of the Top-10 Workplace Safety & Health Rule Violations across all industries in 2022.
Every employer in Washington State is required to create a written Accident Prevention Program (APP) to address the safety and health hazards found in their workplace. Many employers consider their APP as their cornerstone safety program.
Tips for creating a written APP:
- Involve your workers in identifying hazards.
- Educate employees and visitors on your safety and health policies.
- Know the requirements for your industry.
- Review the resources, templates, and samples provided by L&I.
