Governor’s Council for Independent Living
Accepting Applications
WHO WE ARE
The Washington State Independent Living Council (WASILC) is an eleven-member Council appointed by the Governor. The WASILC was established under the authority of Title VII Section 705 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 as amended, (P.L. 102-569), and Washington State Executive Order 93-04 as superseded by Executive Order 04-05.
OUR MISSION
The Washington State Independent Living Council promotes a statewide network supporting the Independent Living Philosophy for people with disabilities through advocacy, education, planning, and collaboration.
CORE VALUES:
Choice, Self-Sufficiency, Independence, Voice, Equal Opportunity, Self-Determination, Equal Access, Consumer Control, Self-Direction, Cross-Disability, Self-Advocacy, Respect, Honesty
SCOPE OF WORK
We collaborate activities with five independent living centers, and partner with dedicated organizations across the state who serve Washingtonians with disabilities.
- We coordinate to develop a three-year State Plan for Independent Living.
- We educate to ensure people with disabilities are valued equally and able to participate fully.
- We advocate for the human and civil rights for all Washingtonians with disabilities.
Openings
WASILC is recruiting for four council positions. Positions are open for individuals who represent or advocates for the disability community and Tribal VR Director. We are looking to increase representation from the following populations: communities of color, central, eastern, and coastal regions, and varied socio-economic backgrounds. Representatives will contribute their unique perspectives and insights on the opportunities, challenges, and barriers experienced by people with disabilities.
Time commitment
WASILC has four, two-day meetings per year (January, April, July, and October) in different areas of the state. Currently we are meeting virtually for one day per quarter. Council subcommittees also establish work plans and meet monthly by conference call to coordinate their work. Prospective members should expect to commit about 6-8 hours per month to WASILC activities, such as reading and responding to emails, participating in subcommittee activities (generally by zoom/phone), and keeping up with what's going on in your communities and statewide. Expenses incurred due to travel and lodging for WASILC related activities are reimbursable. The perfect candidate is someone with a disability or disability-related experience who is passionate about disability rights.
HOW YOU CAN ENGAGE
WASILC strives to ensure statewide representation of members who represent a broad range of individuals with geographic, disability, business, ethnic, service provider, advocacy and agency diversity. If you are committed and passionate about the values and mission of Independent Living or are interested and want more information, please contact Kim Conner, Executive Director, at Kimberly.Conner@dshs.wa.gov or 360.819.0672 (cell).
To apply, submit an online application to the Governor’s office of Board and Commissions.
