On May 19, WSC celebrated its 40th anniversary with the Federal Way Public Schools AmeriCorps team. In true WSC style, staff and AmeriCorps members chose to give rather than receive: current and former WSC staff and members, ESD employees (including Commissioner Cami Feek), and many special guests gathered at Celebration Park in Federal Way, spent a few minutes celebrating notable moments in WSC's history and FWPS' ongoing AmeriCorps legacy as one of WSC's first team programs, then donned their work gloves and dove into a beautification project that included planting a brand new serviceberry tree in commemoration. It was great to have so many wonderful people there with us, and we appreciate everyone who could make it.

The smiling team gathers after the ceremony and before the work begins. Along with current and former WSC staff, site staff and members, guests included ESD staff, representatives from Serve Washington, Federal Way city council, school district and parks department, and WSC's first director, Bill Basl.
A special cake for a special day. The picture on the cake is a replica of the plaque mounted in front of the newly-planted serviceberry tree with "Flat Stanley" as an AmeriCorps member made famous in 2015.

As service terms wrap up, note that WSC Coordinators will send exit paperwork via DocuSign. Members, if you don't meet required hours by the end of your term due to a compelling circumstance (per your MSA) and you wish to receive a pro-rate of your ed award, please ask your site staff reach out to WSC for further guidance. Also, your last timesheet can only be submitted at the end of your final shift on your last day of actual service.
The recording of the Implicit Bias in Recruitment training hosted on May 16 is now available! This session was intended to help partner sites expand their candidate pools for open AmeriCorps positions and break down barriers to applying for service, though anyone interested in learning more about how biases can impact our decision making will find it helpful to review. You can view the recording here.
Site staff, if you haven't seen our email announcements about WSC's Member Equity Enhancements for next program year, please contact your WSC Coordinator right away.
