Due date extended for stories of service

The deadline for the second quarter story of service has been extended to April 15.

This is an unusual time when many service sites are closed and members are performing service that may be different from normally assigned duties, so we invite you to share a story about how you are continuing to serve your community during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Find guidance on writing and submitting your story of service on our website, and reach out to your Coordinator for assistance if you have any questions!

A reflection

We do not always get the chance to see the fruits of our hard work. To some of us, it's really not about the credit so much as the chance to see change, if you are lucky enough. Being an AmeriCorps volunteer involves an amount of selflessness to a degree.

Our impacts in these roles are genuinely long term. We do our best to see immediate improvements, however there is a need to recognize societal processes that we are a part of. A member must remember that extension, the promise we made to commit to making things better for the many. There are dynamics that fall into play when we least expect it.

Earth Day is April 22!

While we would typically have outdoor service projects to celebrate Earth Day, the Governor's Stay Home, Stay Healthy order will require us to think outside (or, inside, if you will) the box as to how we can celebrate at home. Here are some ideas:

11 ways to take action while social distancing. Please remember that if you decide to participate in #3, you must do this as a private citizen and not identify as an AmeriCorps or WSC member.

Some lifestyle changes you can make to help our planet.

In the meantime, let's all look forward to the warmer, sunny days of summer to come, when we can celebrate Earth Day every day.

In case you missed it..

AmeriCorps Director, Chester Spellman, recently shared a message of gratitude to members about their perseverence in the face of challenging times - check it out!

WSC COVID-19 info hub

Right now, all of us are being inundated with ever-changing COVID information, and after a while, it can feel overwhelming trying to keep track of it all.

That's why we're trying to limit our updates to weekly emails and created a one-stop web hub.

Please bookmark our COVID-19 webpage and stop by frequently. Ideas for teleservice are being posted here, and soon, alternative service opportunities will be, too.

We're also posting our latest weekly COVID update email, and linking you to information from health officials.

WA Basic Food benefit expanded

As many of our members utilize the state's Basic Food program, we want to make sure you're aware that Congress has approved extra benefits for March and April up to the maximum allowed for each eligible household.
