Washington state will add 155 accessible and affordable housing units for IDD community
Each biennium, the Washington State Department of Commerce funds housing projects through grants or low-interest loans from their Housing Trust Fund.
DSHS’s 2022 report on housing needs for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities estimates that more than 37,000 adults with IDD face housing insecurity. In January, the Department of Commerce announced it will direct $25 million toward housing for affordable and accessible housing.
Our Housing and Community Living team has connected with more than a dozen builders to plan construction of 155 affordable housing units. This was a big step forward for people with IDD, as the HTF awarded 65 units in 2022 and only eight units in 2021.
Additionally, the Department of Social and Health Services, the Department of Commerce and the Washington State Developmental Disabilities Council worked together to fulfill about $19 million worth of affordable and accessible housing contracts through the Dan Thompson Memorial Developmental Disabilities Community Services Account in 2023.
