Curriculum update: updating the 40 hour CORE

The work still continues on the 40 hour CORE Curriculum update project though in-person retreats are on hold. DDA is developing curriculum packets for each chapter based on the information collected from two of three regions.

DDA is securing a professional curriculum developer and trainer to coordinate work groups. The Region 1 retreat is on hold, but will be the first action item implemented when it is safe to gather in groups again.

Virtual presenters guidance

We are all moving incredibly fast to meet the needs of our programs. We are learning not only a new way to train and work, but a new way to be in our professional and personal worlds. Virtual connecting through meetings and trainings may be a new platform for many of us. Here is a sneak peak of the information I am gathering to present to you about how to facilitate virtual trainings and presentations. If you are a virtual presenter here is some evidence and experienced-based information that will help you:

Choose a main facilitator/speaker: If you have multiple speakers or trainers, choose one person to introduce all speakers and drive the Powerpoint or visual presentation. Virtual presenters will be able to follow presentations better and more effectively if they hear one consistent voice. If you introduce each speaker you will allow them time to unmute before they speak.

Eliminate “dead air” and unmute early: A pitfall of many virtual presentations is dead air. This can make people feel like their sound failed or we can lose engagement. If you can pick up your cue quickly that will help. The facilitator will introduce you and what you will be covering, unmute (and stay quiet) as soon as you hear your name. Be ready to speak before the facilitator finishes the introduction

Avoid jokes and sarcasm: Humor often doesn’t translate in virtual presentations . During this COVID-pandemic we need to maintain a professional and compassionate tone. Avoid jokes, sarcasm, irony or other subtle social nuances that will not translate in a virtual format.

Try to login early/but definitely don’t be late: If you are presenter, a login early to your virtual platform (reserve the room early and late to make time for this). This allows time to get a sense of who is in the room, work through technical issues t, etc. Zoom, Google Hangouts, and other virtual platforms can fill up and if a presenter is shut out of meeting it can be challenging to find a way to grant that presenter access.

Question & answer: Save question and answers until the end of the training or take learning checkpoint breaks to allow for questions. Planning your questions and answer time carefully allows you to control time and keeps your presentation on task. With a virtual audience, it is easy for a presenter or trainer to be pulled off task.

Choose a pitcher who can pitch questions to different presenters. Virtual audiences will feel secure if there is one consistent voice. This also breaks down any chances for “dead air” so presenters have a chance to unmute themselves before they speak.

For small audiences, encourage people to unmute both their microphone and their video, this adds a human element to virtual trainings that is needed. If your presentation is large, ask audiences to type in their questions. The reason for this is that there are less chances for technical difficulties (sound problems), allows the facilitator to bundle questions and filter questions that are too specific, outside the scope, offensive or confusing.
