March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness month. In 1987, President Ronald Reagan declared a public proclamation - dedicating the month of March to increasing public awareness about the needs and potential of Americans with developmental disabilities. The main goal is for more people to include persons with developmental disabilities in all areas of community life. Another goal is to draw attention to barriers people with disabilities sometimes face when connecting to their communities, such as a physical environment that is not accessible, or communication barriers.  Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month covers three areas: education, employment, and community living.

The National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities is partnering with the Association for University Centers on Disabilities and the National Disabilities Rights Network on a DD Awareness Month social media campaign.

The campaign has released a DD Awareness Month Resource Guide with tips and resources to  help everyone celebrate the month.
