Curriculum Update: Updating the 40 hour CORE

It is time to start updating our 40-hour CORE curriculum. DSHs is welcoming providers, self-advocates, county participants and other stakeholders in the workgroup process.

The next step is to get together in each region for a one-day retreat to examine the strengths and challenges of the current curriculum and organize into writing workgroups.

Please bring activities or ideas about how the 40-hour CORE curriculum could be updated and improved.

The retreat dates and times are below. Participants can attend any scheduled retreat date. Registration will close 2 weeks prior to each retreat. Lunch will be provided.

Region 1: Register - March 31, 2020   (Spokane, WA)         9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Region 2: Register - February 18, 2020 (Renton, WA)        9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Region 3: Register - March 3, 2020   (Longview, WA)       9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

How is Technology Changing Employee Training?

As workplaces modernize and programs expand DSHS is finding creative ways to share space, serve more individuals and stay connected. The good news is that technology can help trainers reach more individuals and create innovative and interactive learning environments.

Augmented Reality and Training: Augmented reality differs from virtual reality and is the newest training tool used in many organizations. This technology enables the user to interact with digital and interactive objects in their physical environment. Some programs are using augmented reality to help people navigate client homes before they enter the home. Others are video-taping the client home and using an interactive tool where employees that walk through the home and where to locate medication, food, emergency supplies, etc, before they enter the home. This can be done using simple video or online curriculum development templates like articulate.

Social Media and the Workplace: Social media has been traditionally banned from workspaces, however some innovative companies are creating social media platforms to communicate. One common social media platform that allows chat, video and meetings is Skype and Zoom. The interactive platforms allow employees in different locations to have immediate access to each other. It is also a creative way for trainers to engage virtual participants, track who is attending and who is paying attention (not using other webpages while in the virtual training room). Some platforms like Microsoft  Teams allow trainers to create a virtual classroom where they can break participants into small groups, post polls, give handouts, create interactive graphic displays and more. This technology is used in modern workplaces to create more flexibility and structure.

How can technology support adult learning?

Henrick J. Mandrup, a specialist in employee education and training indicated that:

68% of employees prefer to learn at work: Through technology, trainers engage with learners outside the classroom and on the job. Technology can also bring work to the training room using augmented reality.

58% of employees prefer to learn at their own pace: Technology allows people to engage in diverse environments whenit works for them. It also allows individuals to interact with self-paced activities so they may work at their own pace.

49% of employees prefer to learn to the point of need: Technology allows for coaching as soon as the need arises. For example, social media sites like Skype allows overnight staff access to each other if they have questions or need immediate coaching.
