Curriculum Update: Updating the 40 hour CORE
It is time to update the 40-hour CORE curriculum. DDA is organizing workgroups on the west side (Region 2 & 3) and east side (Region 1) of the state.
The first step is an interactive webinar to orient everyone to this process and start organizing workgroups.
DDA can then start scheduling meeting times. The Department will also be working to engage self-advocates and other stakeholders. Provider feedback and resource sharing around who should be engaged in this process is needed, please send names and contact information.
If you are interested in being involved with updating this curriculum please register for one of the two orientation webinars offered in December:
If you were not able to attend one of the webinar’s in November it is not too late. Contact Sarah Blanchette for details.
Updating vs. Developing Curriculum
As DDA updates the 40 hour CORE curriculum, it is important to understand how it differs from the development of new curriculum.
Values - driven organizations create values drive training. Developmental Disabilities Administration is guided by our values. This is where updating and developing curriculum are similar. Both center on the importance of values and let that guide the process. For a curriculum update DDA will review, critique and analyze this curriculum to ensure it aligns with DDA Guiding Values: Competence, Health and Safety, Inclusion, Relationships, Power and Choice as well as Status.
Mission and vision of the training. Perhaps the biggest difference between updating and developing curriculum is that DDA has experience and expertise with this curriculum to judge its effectiveness. DDA will look closely at this curriculum and answer the following questions:
- Does the curriculum meet the mission and vision of DDA?
- What is the purpose of this curriculum? DDA will review the purpose statement to make sure this curriculum aligns with it.
Promoting best practices: since this curriculum was written, many changes have occurred in policy, WAC, cultural awareness, etc. This update is an opportunity to ensure DDA is using evidence - based practices and reflecting those practices. Discussions will show how this training reflects a person-centered philosophy.
Nearing the end for 2019, the following online CE resources are available:
Free CE courses developed by DDA, located on the website.
Continuing Education Developers-Businesses offering DSHS Approved CE courses.
**Please note costs may be associated with non-DDA developed resources provided.
