Northbound I-5 traffic returns to usual alignment Friday morning, Oct. 9, south of Bellingham

BELLINGHAM – Northbound Interstate 5 will return to its usual alignment by 5 a.m. Friday, Oct. 9, south of Bellingham (milepost 247) after construction of a new fish-passable structure over Chuckanut Creek. A series of overnight lane reductions and rolling slowdowns Thursday night, Oct. 8, will allow crews to switch traffic from a temporary bypass road.

Contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation have completed major work to install the new structure beneath northbound I-5 as part of a project correcting 17 barriers to fish migration near Lake Samish. Northbound I-5 has used a two-lane, temporary bypass road since June 17 while the structure was built.

Once the switch is complete Friday morning, Oct. 9, travelers will no longer use the temporary bypass road, and it will be removed.

What to expect
Beginning at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, travelers should expect a series of overnight lane reductions and rolling slowdowns while crews remove temporary barriers, restripe lanes and shift traffic off the bypass road.

The advisory speed limit through the work zone will remain in effect while crews continue construction in the area. Drivers are encouraged to slow down, stay alert and follow posted signs.

Although northbound traffic will return to its usual alignment, construction at Chuckanut Creek is ongoing. Old Samish Road will remain closed to through traffic through the end of the year while crews build a new fish-passable structure beneath the county road.

People can find more project information about the I-5 Tributaries to Friday, Lake and Chuckanut Creeks Fish passage project by visiting an online open house.
