In this update:
Plan ahead! Crews will close eastbound SR 520 from I-5 to Montlake Boulevard around the clock from 11 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, to 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 5, to remove a remaining section of the old off-ramp to Montlake Boulevard and start removing portions of the railing on the existing bridge. This work is in preparation for a future traffic shift in 2027.
What to expect:
- SR 520 across Lake Washington will remain open in both directions. Only the section of eastbound SR 520 between I-5 and Montlake Boulevard will close.
- Travelers heading from I-5 to Montlake or wanting to access eastbound SR 520 across Lake Washington will need to use alternate routes.
- The Montlake Boulevard on-ramp to eastbound SR 520 will remain open.
- Nearby neighbors will hear noise from construction equipment.
For questions about this work, please call our 24-hour hotline at 206-319-4520 or email us at SR520bridge@wsdot.wa.gov.
Heads up! Crews will close the westbound SR 520 off-ramps to northbound I-5 and East Roanoke Street most weeknights between Monday, Oct. 5, and Thursday, Oct. 29, for excavation work near the ramps.
Closures are currently scheduled for Monday through Thursday nights:
- Oct. 5-8
- Oct. 19-22
- Oct. 26-29
What to expect:
- Closures start at 10 p.m. each night. The ramps will reopen by 6 a.m. the next morning.
- Westbound SR 520 traffic continuing past the Montlake Boulevard and Lake Washington Boulevard exits will detour to southbound I-5. A single lane of westbound SR 520 between Montlake Boulevard and I-5 will also close during these hours.
- Crews will excavate during daytime hours. The nightly closures give trucks the space needed to load and haul away the excavated soil.
- Neighbors near the work zone will hear noise from trucks and construction equipment.
The schedule may change as work progresses. Check our Construction Corner for the latest updates.
Heads up! Crews will close both directions of Boyer Avenue East between East Roanoke Street and Everett Avenue East nightly Monday, Oct. 12, through Thursday, Oct. 15. Crews will use these closures to move equipment into the area to prepare for bridge pier construction near the Boyer Hillside.
What to expect:
- Closures start at 10 p.m. each night. The road will reopen by 6 a.m. the following morning.
- Signed detours will be in place, and local access will be maintained.
- Pedestrian access will be maintained through the closure area.
- Neighbors near the work zone may hear noise from crews and construction equipment.
We understand that construction can be disruptive, and we appreciate your patience as we continue working in a confined area. If you have questions or concerns about this utility work, please call our 24-hour hotline at 206-319-4520 or email us at SR520bridge@wsdot.wa.gov.
On-land piledriving near Boyer Avenue East
Crews have mostly finished installing 11 piles on land near Boyer Avenue East, south of the existing bridge. This work is currently paused and is expected to resume in the next couple of weeks.
Later this fall, crews plan to install about 36 piles near Boyer Avenue East, north of the existing bridge. These piles will support a work platform crews will use to build a bridge pier on land near the shoreline. We’ll share more information once the work is scheduled.
Piledriving near the Montlake lid

Piledriving will pause on Friday, Oct. 2, and Saturday, Oct. 3, during the first part of the weekend closure and is planned to resume Sunday, Oct. 4. Please note the schedule may change as work progresses.
In-water impact piledriving
In the coming weeks, crews will begin in-water impact piledriving on the northeast side of the bridge. Crews plan to install about 100 piles in the water in this area. We’ll share more details as the work approaches.
What to expect:
- Impact and vibratory piledriving on land and impact piledriving in the water.
- Typical piledriving hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., though crews may also work at night and on weekends.
- Neighbors near the work zone will notice increased noise and vibration.
More piledriving schedule information coming soon
We’re continuing to work on a way to give neighbors more advance notice of piledriving through schedule updates on our Construction Corner. We’ll share more in the coming weeks. Thanks again for your patience.
