 Sept. 25, 2026
We will close right lane of northbound I-5 from Lakeway Drive to north of Iowa Street (mileposts 252-254) from 6 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, until 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 27. The closure will allow our maintenance crews to safely replace concrete panels on this section of the roadway. This work needs dry weather and may be rescheduled.
People traveling in the area should plan for delays, use caution and do their part to keep the road crew safe by slowing down and removing distractions.
Our crews finished repairs on the Lake Creek Bridge north of Lake McMurray almost six days early and reopened State Route 9 to both directions of traffic over the bridge Thursday morning, Sept. 24.
The repairs were done during a full closure of SR 9, which started Monday, Sept. 21. Our crews removed portions of the bridge's timber deck, replaced the decking and paved over the top with asphalt.
The SR 9 Lake Creek Bridge is a wood truss bridge built in 1966.
The bridge had been reduced to a single lane with a temporary traffic signal alternating northbound and southbound traffic since March 24 due to deteriorating deck conditions.

Crews nearly completed repairs to the SR 9 Klein Ditch Bridge but now need a window of dry weather to pave the bridge before they can reopen both directions of traffic.
We’re nearly finished making repairs to the SR 9 bridge over Klein Ditch (milepost 87), but the wet weather has put a pause on our progress. Since closing both directions of SR 9 Wednesday morning Sept. 23, crews removed damaged portions of the bridge’s timber deck, replaced the deck with new timber and installed a waterproof membrane.
Unfortunately, the rain Friday, Sept. 25, will not allow us to pave the bridge and complete repairs by our scheduled 6 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, reopening time. We’re hoping to get a window of dry weather on Saturday, Sept. 26, but that means we will need to extend the full closure. We will provide updates on our travel map and on our regional X and Bluesky accounts when we reopen both directions of SR 9.
Our paving project also will have northbound and southbound SR 9 traffic alternating in several Whatcom County locations between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 28-29, as this project looks to complete work in the next couple of weeks.
Crews completed installing a new fish-passable structure along a tributary to Hansen Creek late Wednesday, Sept. 23, reopened both directions of SR 9.
Our crews completed installation of a new 18-foot concrete box culvert beneath SR 9 that will allow fish passage along a tributary to Hansen Creek. Crews restored SR 9 to its usual, two-lane configuration just south of Kalloch Road (milepost 59) late Wednesday, Sept. 23. Traffic had alternated through the area since early August while the phased installation of culvert progressed.
A second, 20-foot box culvert was installed about 10 miles south along a tributary to Nookachamps Creek earlier this summer. Combined, the two new fish-passable structures will restore about 2 miles of natural habitat for bull trout, coho salmon, resident trout, steelhead and sea-run cutthroat.
Though the new structures are in the ground and northbound and southbound SR 9 traffic has been restored, people traveling through the two work sites should continue to expect periodic, weekday lane reductions between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. the next few weeks while crews complete construction.
Northbound I-5 will be reduced to a single lane overnight Tuesday, Sept. 29, near Stanwood, as the I-5 Secret Creek Fish Passage project continues finishing roadway improvements. Two lanes of southbound I-5 will close overnight Wednesday, Sept. 30.
People traveling through northern Snohomish County should expect the two left lanes of northbound I-5 to close south of SR 532 (mileposts 210-213) from 9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, to 5 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30. One night later, two lanes of southbound I-5 will close from 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, to 5 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 1. A single lane will close as early as 6 p.m. each night, and all lanes will reopen by noon the following day. The work needs dry weather and will be rescheduled if rain is forecast.
The double-lane closures are part of a series of nighttime lane reductions over the next two weeks. People should expect single-lane closures along northbound and southbound I-5 between 6 p.m. and noon the next day the nights of Monday, Sept. 28, and Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 5-6.
People traveling through the area during the lane reductions should expect delays.
The project is replacing barriers to fish migration beneath I-5 and Pacific Highway with new fish-passable structures, restoring access to more than 5 miles of habitat while improving roadway infrastructure and wildlife access in the area.
A pair of upcoming projects will pave more than 5 miles of SR 532 on Camano Island and in Stanwood.
Learn more about paving work on SR 532 on Camano Island and in Stanwood and provide feedback through a questionnaire on how you use these stretches of road through Oct. 2.
In 2028, we will repave and repaint two segments of SR 532:
- On Camano Island, we will pave 2.6 miles of SR 532 in both directions from North Sunrise Boulevard to just east of Smith Road between mileposts 0.0 and 2.6.
- In Stanwood, we will pave 2.5 miles of SR 532 in both directions from 270th Street Southwest to just east of 72nd Avenue Northwest between mileposts 3.4 and 6.0.
Gathering input will better inform us how travelers make the most use of SR 532 in the area. Everyone is encouraged to participate, including people walking, biking, rolling and accessing transit.
Each project is scheduled for construction in 2028, when crews will repair and preserve the existing roadway surface, update the roadway striping and evaluate curb ramps to determine if they meet current accessibility standards. These projects are subject to our Complete Streets requirements. We will incorporate active transportation facilities as feasible within the project delivery timelines and budget.
We often have special events and roadwork taking place in the Northend, including construction projects, maintenance and repairs. We always try to minimize any effects to travel, but sometimes it is necessary to close a lane to do the work or create a safe work zone for our crews.
If you spot our crews, slow down and give them space to work! A huge thanks to our crews for all their hard work.
