In this update:
Crews are working around the clock to remove the temporary eastbound SR 520 off-ramp to Montlake Boulevard during this week’s closure. The ramp will reopen by 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19.
Please note: Crews have made progress removing the old ramp, but the work is taking longer than anticipated. They will close the ramp again nightly Monday, Sept. 21, through Thursday, Sept. 24 to finish removing the remaining sections of the unused off-ramp.
Crews also plan to return to this area in early October to move equipment out of the work area. We’ll share more details as we get closer to this work.
Crews remove a piece of the old eastbound SR 520 off-ramp to Montlake Boulevard
What to expect:
- During these closures, travelers heading eastbound on SR 520 will not be able to exit onto Montlake Boulevard. Drivers entering eastbound SR 520 from I-5 will continue across Lake Washington and pay the SR 520 bridge toll. For information about toll payments, please visit the Good to Go! webpage, or contact customer service at 1-866-936-8246.
- Drivers heading to Montlake and the University of Washington from I-5 will need to plan ahead and use alternate routes.
- The eastbound SR 520 on-ramp from Montlake Boulevard will remain open.
- Nearby neighbors will hear noise from construction equipment.
It’s official: the City of Seattle is the new owner of Montlake Homes – the former Montlake Market and gas station property previously used by WSDOT for construction staging for the Montlake Project. With this transfer complete, the City of Seattle plans to redevelop the site into permanently affordable homeownership in the next three to five years. Keep an eye out for a notification from the Montlake Community Club about a community conversation in October.
In the meantime, WSDOT will continue to allow Skanska, the Portage Bay Bridge and Roanoke Lid Project contractor, to use the site for parking until the City is ready for construction. This makes sure the site doesn’t sit empty and reduces the risk of vandalism or trespassing.

On-land piledriving near Boyer Avenue East
Crews have started installing piles on land near Boyer Avenue East on the south side of the existing bridge. We expect to continue this work intermittently through early October.
In mid-October, we also plan to install about 36 piles near Boyer Avenue East on the north side of the existing bridge. These piles will support a work platform that will allow crews to build a bridge pier on land near the shoreline.

Starting again in late September and continuing through late October, crews will install piles between SR 520 and the eastbound SR 520 off-ramp to Montlake Boulevard.
We have installed half of the required piles in this area. Once complete, the piles will create a retaining wall to support a new temporary roadway. Crews will build the temporary roadway later this year.
What to expect:
- Impact and vibratory piledriving on land.
- Typical work hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., though crews may need to work at night.
- Neighbors near the work zone will notice increased noise and vibration during this work.

As soon as late September, crews will begin installing drilled shafts for lid pier 1 on the south side of SR 520 near Federal Avenue East (see graphic below). The drilled shafts are part of the foundation that will support the future Roanoke lid.
Instead of using a vibratory or impact hammer to install the steel casings for each drilled shaft, crews will use an oscillator to rotate the casings into the ground, similar to work completed earlier this year in the lid pier 4 area.
Nearby neighbors will experience noise and vibration during daytime construction. We expect this phase of lid construction to continue through the fall.
What to expect during drilled shaft work:
- Drilled shaft installation on the south side of SR 520 near Federal Avenue East.
- Typical work hours are 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. weekdays, excluding holidays, and 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on limited weekends.
- Increased noise and vibration from trucks and construction equipment.
