In this update:
Starting at 4:30 p.m. this Saturday, Sept. 12, crews will close the temporary eastbound SR 520 off-ramp to Montlake Boulevard around the clock for one week. The ramp is scheduled to reopen by 8 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19.
During the closure, crews will remove the old eastbound SR 520 off-ramp to Montlake Boulevard to make space for another traffic shift coming in early 2027.
Want the rundown? Watch our video PSA, where Tony breaks down three things you need to know about the closure.
What to expect:
- During this closure, travelers heading eastbound on SR 520 will not be able to exit onto Montlake Boulevard. Drivers entering eastbound SR 520 from I-5 will continue across Lake Washington and pay the SR 520 bridge toll. For information about toll payments, please visit the Good to Go! webpage, or contact customer service at 1-866-936-8246.
- Drivers wanting to get to Montlake and the University of Washington from I-5 will need to plan ahead and use alternate routes. Note: The closure begins at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, after the start of the UW Husky game.
- The Montlake Boulevard on-ramp to eastbound SR 520 will remain open.
- Nearby neighbors will hear noise from construction equipment.
Please note: This will be a busy construction weekend for the Puget Sound region. In addition to this ramp closure, Seattle travelers should be aware that the I-5 express lanes will be closed and northbound I-5 will remain reduced by two lanes for the Revive I-5 Project. Northbound SR 99 First Avenue South Bridge will one also be reduced by one lane for maintenance on the bridge. You can find for more information about regional closures this weekend on WSDOT’s social media pages.
Season 3 of in-water impact piledriving began Sept. 1 and will continue through April 30, 2027. Neighbors can expect intermittent piledriving throughout the project area during this time.
Typical working hours will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends, though we may work later into the evening if needed. If our schedule changes, we’ll send out email updates to keep you informed.
Crews have started installing piles on land near Boyer Avenue East, on the south side of the existing bridge. We expect this work to continue intermittently throughout September.
In mid-October, we also plan to install piles near Boyer Avenue East, on the north side of the existing bridge. These piles will support a work platform for crews and equipment as they prepare to build a bridge pier on land.
Map of current and upcoming piledriving activities
What to expect:
- Impact and vibratory piledriving on land.
- Typical work hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., though some nighttime work may be needed.
- Neighbors near the work zone will notice increased noise and vibration.
If you have questions about this work or the project, please call our 24-hour hotline at 206-319-4520, or email us at SR520bridge@wsdot.wa.gov.
On select nights from Sept. 12–19, crews will work on and near both SR 520 and I-5. On the west side of the project area, crews will conduct potholing in the I-5 express lanes. Near the east end of the project area, crews will remove the old eastbound SR 520 off-ramp to Montlake Boulevard.
What to expect
- Nighttime work hours are 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
- Neighbors will hear noise from various equipment, including work trucks, concrete saws, a core drill, vacuum trucks and hand tools.
- We have shared information about hotel accommodations with neighbors who live closest to some of the work.
Hearing noise or experiencing vibration? Call us.
We monitor noise and vibration in real time around the project area. If you feel like you’re experiencing excessive noise or vibration from this work, please call the 24-hour hotline as soon as possible at 206-319-4520 so we can investigate in real time. We have independent noise monitors onsite who can help mitigate noise or issues with equipment out in the field. You can also email us at SR520bridge@wsdot.wa.gov.
The city of Seattle has issued a Temporary Noise Variance for this work.
Couldn’t make it to our annual open house in August? We have another opportunity where you can stop by and talk with us! Meet with Skanska and WSDOT representatives to learn about the project and upcoming construction activities. Our table will be outside the Montlake Library.
