In this update:
Starting at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, crews will close the temporary eastbound SR 520 off-ramp to Montlake Boulevard around the clock for one week. The ramp is scheduled to reopen by 8 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19.
During the closure, crews will remove the old eastbound SR 520 off-ramp to Montlake Boulevard to make space for another traffic shift coming in early 2027.
 What to expect:
- During this closure, travelers heading eastbound on SR 520 will not be able to exit onto Montlake Boulevard. Drivers entering eastbound SR 520 from I-5 will continue across Lake Washington and pay the SR 520 bridge toll. For information about toll payments, please visit the Good to Go! webpage, or contact customer service at 1-866-936-8246.
- Drivers wanting to get to Montlake and the University of Washington from I-5 will need to plan ahead and use alternate routes.
- The Montlake Boulevard on-ramp to eastbound SR 520 will remain open.
- Nearby neighbors will hear noise from construction equipment.
Want the rundown? Watch our video PSA, where Tony breaks down three things you need to know about the closure.
On Tuesday, Sept. 1, crews started installing piles in the water in Portage Bay using an impact hammer. Throughout the summer, crews used a vibratory hammer in the water or drove piles on land, which differs from the in-water impact piledriving now underway.
The third season of in-water impact piledriving will continue through April 30, 2027. We expect to install over 100 piles throughout Portage Bay, primarily on the northeast side between the trestle and the existing bridge.
Typical working hours will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends, though we may work later into the evening if needed. If our schedule changes, we’ll send out email updates to keep you informed.
As early as Wednesday, Sept. 9, crews will begin installing approximately 11 piles in the area between Boyer Avenue East and our southwest work trestle. These piles will support our new haul road connection to and from Boyer Avenue East.
Map of current and upcoming piledriving activities
What to expect:
- Impact and vibratory piledriving on land.
- Typical work hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., though some nighttime work may be needed.
- Neighbors near the work zone will notice increased noise and vibration.

We enjoyed seeing all the neighbors who attended our in-person open house last week at Queen City Yacht Club! The WSDOT and Skanska teams appreciated the opportunity to meet with you and talk about current and upcoming construction.
If you missed us, don’t worry! We’ll have more opportunities to connect later this fall and will share specific dates soon.

Meet Bridgette, our newest Portage Bay Project engineer! She’s here to chew through the details and help explain what’s happening in Portage Bay.
In the first episode of Bridgette Breaks It Down, she explains how we’re building the new Portage Bay bridges in three stages while keeping traffic moving.
