ANACORTES: Expect SR 20 delays for 19 days beginning Monday, Aug. 17, north of Deception Pass Bridge

Construction area along SR 20 at Campbell Lake Road.

During a 19-day lane reduction of SR 20 beginning Monday, Aug. 17, near Campbell Lake Road, crews will level and grade the area to prepare for roundabout construction in 2027.

If you’re traveling State Route 20 between Skagit and Island counties, please plan for delays, especially during busier travel times. We will reduce SR 20 to a single lane and alternate traffic for 19 days beginning Monday morning, Aug. 17, between Anacortes and Deception Pass.

Map shows location of construction on SR 20 at Campbell Lake Road near Anacortes.

An automated traffic signal will alternate traffic through the three-way intersection at Campbell Lake Road near milepost 46 from 6 a.m. Monday, Aug. 17, until Friday, Sept. 4. Work is expected to wrap up, and SR 20 will be returned to its usual configuration before Labor Day weekend.

People traveling between Whidbey Island and Anacortes, including ferry customers, should expect delays and build significant additional time into their trips. Travelers also should check conditions on our real-time travel map before they leave and avoid traditionally busier travel times if possible.

The work is part of an intersection improvement project. During the 19-day lane reduction, we will build up and grade the intersection so that a roundabout can be built in 2027. This work must be done this summer, so the area can settle and stabilize over the winter, before crews build the roundabout during spring and summer 2027.

After the 19-day lane reduction ends Sept. 4, SR 20 will return to its previous configuration with an eastbound SR 20 left-turn lane to Campbell Lake Road and an acceleration lane. Both were removed leading up to the 19-day closure to create room for work. SR 20 also has a reduced speed of 40 mph near the intersection.

MOUNT VERNON: SR 9 remains closed until Wednesday, Aug. 19, to install fish passage

Construction area with excavation of SR 9 near Mount Vernon.

After closing SR 9 east of Mount Vernon on Wednesday, Aug. 12, crews excavated to install a new fish-passable structure. SR 9 will remain closed through Wednesday, Aug. 19.

Both directions of SR 9 will remain closed near Mount Vernon Big Lake Road until 6 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, to install a new fish passage east of Mount Vernon. A signed detour uses SR 534, Interstate 5 and SR 538/College Way while SR 9 is closed.

The detour is approximately 25 miles long, point to point, though most travelers will not need to follow the entire length of the detour. People traveling through the area should plan ahead and add time to their travel plans. People who live south of the closure cannot reach Mount Vernon Big Lake Road and must detour during the closure.

Our contractor crews have excavated SR 9 and are installing a 20-foot box culvert beneath SR 9 to remove a barrier blocking fish migration along a tributary to Nookachamps Creek.

Second fish passage

A second, 18-foot box culvert is being installed beneath SR 9 north of Sedro-Woolley to correct a barrier to native fish along a tributary to Hansen Creek, south of Kalloch Road (milepost 59).

That structure is being installed during an active 42-day continuous lane reduction with alternating traffic, which is scheduled to finish Monday, Sept. 14.

Combined, the two new fish-passable structures will restore about 2 miles of natural habitat for bull trout, coho salmon, resident trout, steelhead and sea-run cutthroat

BELLINGHAM: Expect two days of northbound I-5 lane reductions beginning Saturday, Aug. 15, for maintenance

Northbound I-5 will be reduced to a single lane for two days beginning Saturday, Aug 15, in Bellingham. From 6 to 10 a.m. daily Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 15-16, northbound I-5 will be reduced to a single lane between Samish Way and Texas Street (mileposts 252-254). People traveling in the area should plan for delays and do their part to keep the road crew safe by slowing down and removing distractions.

Our maintenance crews will replace concrete panels during the lane reductions, creating a smoother ride for people traveling through the area.

The Iowa Street on-ramp to northbound I-5 also will close from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15. This work needs dry weather, and one or more days may be rescheduled if it rains.

ALGER: Fish-passable structures installed along tributaries to Friday Creek

Construction sight with crews and machinery building a bridge along southbound I-5 south of Bellingham.

Crews work to build a new southbound I-5 bridge over Chuckanut Creek south of Bellingham.

All roads, lanes and ramps are now open near the I-5 interchange at Alger/Lake Samish Road after we installed new fish-passable structures beneath both directions of I-5 and Lake Samish Road. Lake Samish Road was the last to open Thursday night, Aug. 13.

Though the new structures are in place, we still have plenty of work in the area to restore habitat along the tributaries that will flow into the new structures and into Friday Creek. Expect nighttime lane reductions along northbound and southbound I-5 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly Sunday through Thursday nights near exit 240 over the next couple of weeks.

Chuckanut Creek

A few miles north, work is also progressing on new northbound and southbound I-5 bridges that will replace culverts that block fish passage along Chuckanut Creek (milepost 247). Crews are building the southbound bridge and plan to bring in girders that will support the northbound bridge next week.

Northbound and southbound I-5 will continue to use temporary two-lane bypass roads until October while this work progresses. Please slow down, give other vehicles extra room and remain distraction free as you are traveling through the work zone.

We’ll also close the left lane of northbound I-5 through the bypass from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly Sunday through Friday mornings and the southbound lane from 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, to 5 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 20.

Construction, maintenance and special events

Road work ahead

We often have special events and roadwork taking place in the Northend, including construction projects, maintenance and repairs. We always try to minimize any effects to travel, but sometimes it is necessary to close a lane to do the work or create a safe work zone for our crews.

If you spot our crews, slow down and give them space to work! A huge thanks to our crews for all their hard work.
