Seven-day closure of SR 9 begins Wednesday night, Aug. 12, east of Mount Vernon to install fish passage
SEDRO-WOOLLEY – Both directions of State Route 9 will close for seven days around the clock beginning Wednesday night, Aug. 12, to install a new fish passage east of Mount Vernon.
During the closure, contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation will install a 20-foot box culvert beneath SR 9 to remove a barrier blocking fish migration along a tributary to Nookachamps Creek.
What to expect Beginning at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, SR 9 will close just south of Mount Vernon Big Lake Road (milepost 49) until 6 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19.
A signed detour will use SR 534, Interstate 5 and SR 538/College Way while SR 9 is closed. The detour is approximately 25 miles long, point to point, though most travelers will not need to follow the entire length of the detour. People traveling through the area should plan ahead and add time to their travel plans.
Second fish passage A second, 18-foot box culvert is being installed beneath SR 9 north of Sedro-Woolley to correct a barrier to native fish along a tributary to Hansen Creek, south of Kalloch Road (milepost 59).
That structure is being installed during an active 42-day continuous lane reduction with alternating traffic, which is scheduled to finish Monday, Sept. 14.
Combined the two new fish-passable structures will restore about 2 miles of natural habitat for bull trout, coho salmon, resident trout, steelhead and sea-run cutthroat
