In this update:
Plan ahead! Crews will fully close eastbound SR 520 from I-5 to Montlake Boulevard in Seattle from 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8, to 11 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 9, for expansion joint repairs.
What to expect:
- Westbound SR 520 and the Montlake Boulevard on-ramp to eastbound SR 520 will remain open.
- Travelers coming from I-5 who want to access eastbound SR 520 will need to use alternate routes to cross Lake Washington.
- Nearby neighbors will hear noise from construction equipment.
- Several construction closures and downtown sporting events are planned for Saturday evening. Plan ahead and allow extra travel time.
For questions about this work, call our 24-hour hotline at 206-319-4520, or email us at SR520bridge@wsdot.wa.gov.
Westbound SR 520 between Montlake Boulevard and I-5 closed nightly Aug. 10-13 from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Crews will use this closure to restripe parts of the roadway near the exit ramps to I-5 and East Roanoke Street. All westbound SR 520 traffic from the Eastside must exit at either Montlake Boulevard or Lake Washington Boulevard while this section of SR 520 is closed. Eastbound SR 520 is not affected by this work and will remain open.
Eastbound SR 520 off-ramp to Montlake Boulevard closed nightly Aug. 11 and 12 from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Crews will use this closure to restripe sections of the ramp. All traffic entering eastbound SR 520 from I-5 will pay the SR 520 Bridge toll while this ramp is closed. Drivers who do not want to pay the toll or who need to reach Montlake from I-5 must use alternate routes.
For more information about our upcoming closures, please visit our SR 520 Construction Corner.
With major vibration work complete, crews have shifted to installing rebar and pouring concrete for each bridge casing. First, crews will place rebar cages inside the installed casings. Then, they will pour concrete to fill each shaft. Crews will begin pouring concrete in the early morning to allow enough time for the concrete to cure during each work shift.
What to expect:
- Barge deliveries with large rebar cages from Kenmore to Portage Bay on weekdays.
- Daytime and nighttime construction.
Crews pour concrete in a newly installed drilled shaft.
This week, crews continued installing drilled shafts near East Roanoke Street. These drilled shafts will eventually support the future Roanoke lid.
As of this week, we’ve installed 14 out of 18 drilled shafts in this area. We expect to continue this work through mid-August.
Construction overview:
- Crews will continue to use an oscillator to rotate a temporary steel casing into the ground while removing soil.
- Once crews complete excavation, cranes will lift and place the rebar cage into the shaft.
- Crews will then pump concrete into the drilled shaft. After the concrete is in place, they will remove the temporary casing using the oscillator.
Nearby neighbors will experience noise and vibration during construction. This phase of lid construction is expected to continue through the summer.
Crews continue to build the foundation for the future Roanoke lid.
What neighbors should expect:
- Drilled shaft installation between East Roanoke Street and SR 520.
- Typical work hours: 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. weekdays (excluding most holidays) and 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekends.
- Increased noise and vibration from trucks and equipment.
- Flaggers on Delmar Drive East to help guide construction vehicles in and out of the work zone.
- Daytime parking restrictions on the west side of 11th Avenue East between Delmar Drive East and East Miller Street, and on the east side of Boyer Avenue East between East Roanoke Street and Everett Avenue East.
