WSDOT Travel Advisory: Daytime and nighttime lane closures on SR 509 and SR 99 in Pierce County, June 15-19

Daytime and nighttime lane closures on SR 509 and SR 99 in Pierce County, June 15-19

Additional lane closures on 54th Avenue East in Fife

FIFE – To safely install signs above the highway, contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation will close lanes on State Route 509 in Tacoma starting the night of Monday, June 15. In addition, crews will also close lanes on 54th Avenue East to install sign structures and SR 99 in Fife to complete bridge work. This work is part of the SR 167 Completion Project.

SR 509 lane closure information

  • 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday, June 15 to the morning of Wednesday, June 17 – One lane of SR 509 will close in each direction nightly between Alexander Avenue East and Taylor Way. One lane remains open.

SR 99 lane closure information

  • 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 16 through the afternoon of Friday, June 19 – One lane of northbound SR 99 will close daily from the SR 99/Wapato Way East roundabout to 70th Avenue East. One lane remains open.
  • 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 17 through the afternoon of Friday, June 19 – One lane of southbound SR 99 will close daily from 70th Avenue East to the SR 99/Wapato Way East roundabout. One lane remains open.

54th Avenue East traffic control information

  • 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Wednesday, June 17 to the morning of Thursday, June 18 – The northbound lanes and one southbound lane on 54th Avenue East will close nightly between Eighth Street East and Fourth Street East. Flaggers will alternate both directions of traffic through the open southbound lane. Travelers can anticipate brief delays.

People are encouraged to plan ahead, use alternative routes and use caution while driving near the work zone.

SR 167 Completion Project information

The SR 167 Completion Project builds 6 miles of new tolled highway between Puyallup and the Port of Tacoma. Crews are building the new expressway in stages, the first of which completed the Wapato Way East bridge and SR 99 roundabout in Fife. The second stage builds the expressway between I-5 and the Port of Tacoma and is scheduled to open in September.   

Work on the third stage between SR 161/North Meridian Avenue and SR 410 began in 2025. Construction of the last stage between North Meridian Avenue and I-5 is scheduled to begin in July. The entire project is planned for completion by 2030.

The SR 167 Completion Project is part of WSDOT’s Puget Sound Gateway Program, which also includes the SR 509 Completion Project in south King County. Together, the two projects complete critical missing links in Washington’s highway and freight network.
