East Roanoke Street overpass in Seattle closed on Saturday, May 16

Heads up! We are closing East Roanoke Street between Boylston Avenue East and Harvard Avenue East (the overpass above I-5) from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 16. Crews will use this closure to work beneath the southern sidewalk on the overpass.

Drivers won’t be able to use the overpass during the closure. People walking, biking and rolling will still be able to cross.

What to expect:

  • A uniformed police officer on-site to guide pedestrians and traffic around the work area as needed.
  • Noise from trucks and equipment.
  • Access to homes and businesses near the area will be maintained.
  • The westbound SR 520 off-ramps to I-5, Harvard Avenue East and eastbound SR 520 are not affected by this work and will remain open.

Reminder: Major vibratory work underway in Portage Bay

Crews are now using vibratory hammers to install large diameter steel casings in Portage Bay. This work is helping build the new foundations for the future westbound Portage Bay Bridge.

Crews started this work on the northwest side of the temporary work trestle near Boyer Avenue East and will work back and forth between casings, moving east toward Montlake Boulevard.

Nearby neighbors will experience noise and vibration during daytime construction through mid-summer. After crews finish installing the casings, they will begin work on the drilled shafts.

What to expect

  • In-water vibratory casing installation in Portage Bay
  • Typical work hours: 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. weekdays (excluding holidays) and 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on limited weekends
  • Increased noise and vibration during this work

Hearing noise or experiencing vibration? Call our 24/7 hotline.

We monitor noise and vibration in real-time around the project area. If you feel like you’re experiencing excessive noise or vibration from this work, please call the 24-hour hotline as soon as possible at 206-319-4520 so we can investigate in real time.

You can also email us at sr520bridge@wsdot.wa.gov (monitored Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.).

Shift's happening – again! Second traffic shift coming to your SR 520 commute

Last weekend, we completed our first traffic shift of the year! Traffic coming from northbound I-5 to eastbound SR 520 are now using a new temporary off-ramp. Thank you for exercising caution while traveling through the area.

Check out the snapshot above, captured by one of our construction cameras after the traffic shift. You can watch progress around-the-clock via our Portage Bay cams.

Our next traffic shift is coming up soon. During the weekend of May 29 to June 1, we’ll close eastbound SR 520 (from I-5 to Montlake Boulevard) and the Montlake Boulevard on-ramp to eastbound SR 520 to prepare for our second traffic shift. Eastbound SR 520 across Lake Washington will remain open.

Reminder: With the Montlake on-ramp to eastbound SR 520 closed, only HOV 3+ and transit are allowed to use the direct access ramps in Montlake to enter eastbound SR 520. All other travelers must use alternate routes. Learn more about the SR 520 HOV 3+ requirements on our webpage.

What’s shifting

We’re building a temporary eastbound off-ramp to Montlake Boulevard so our crews have extra room to safely remove and build new Portage Bay bridge elements. Later this summer, we’ll remove the existing off-ramp, giving us space to start building permanent infrastructure that will help support the new Portage Bay bridges and the Roanoke lid.

What to expect starting Monday, June 1:

  • Eastbound travelers exiting to Montlake Boulevard should be prepared to exit earlier than usual and follow additional signage through the area.
  • Travelers heading eastbound on SR 520 who don’t exit onto Montlake Boulevard will continue onto the SR 520 floating bridge and pay the SR 520 bridge toll.

For more information on the upcoming changes, check out our blog.

When the project is complete in 2031, travelers will use new, permanent off-ramps from northbound I-5 to eastbound SR 520 and from eastbound SR 520 to Montlake Boulevard.

Eastbound SR 520 off-ramp to Montlake Boulevard weeknight closures continue

Heads up! Crews plan to continue closing the eastbound SR 520 off-ramp to Montlake Boulevard nightly between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. on select weeknights through late May, though the schedule is subject to change.

As a reminder, with the ramp closed, anyone traveling eastbound on SR 520 during these hours will pay the SR 520 bridge toll. Those who do not want to pay the toll or who want to access Montlake Boulevard from I-5 must take alternate routes.
