In this update:
Starting as early as Monday, May 11, crews will begin using vibratory hammers to install large diameter steel casings in Portage Bay. This work will happen mostly during the daytime on weekdays and on limited weekends. These casings will help us build the new foundations of the new westbound Portage Bay bridge.
Crews will start this vibratory work on the northwest side of the temporary work trestle near Boyer Avenue East. Crews will work back and forth between casings, moving east toward Montlake Boulevard.
Crews will use a large vibratory hammer to install each casing. Nearby neighbors will experience noise and vibration during daytime construction through mid-summer. After we finish installing the casings, we will begin working on the drilled shafts. We’ll share more information on this when we get closer to the start of this work.
Construction overview
- Crews will use a large vibratory hammer – larger than our standard hammer for piledriving – to finish installing each casing.
- Each casing is hollow and will reach its final depth with the assistance of additional excavating equipment.
- We expect to use vibratory hammers to install casings on the north side of the work trestle through mid-summer, though the schedule is subject to change.

What to expect
- In-water vibratory casing installation in Portage Bay
- Typical work hours: 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. weekdays (excluding holidays) and 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on limited weekends
- Increased noise and vibration during this work

Don’t forget! Shift is about to go down with a weekend closure and a major traffic shift for I-5 to eastbound SR 520 drivers coming Monday morning.
Beginning at 11 p.m. tomorrow night, May 8, through 5 a.m. Monday, May 11, crews will close eastbound SR 520 between I-5 and Montlake Boulevard to prepare for an upcoming traffic shift. The Montlake Boulevard on-ramp to eastbound SR 520 will also close during this time.
You can read more about this closure and what to expect on our Construction Corner and the WSDOT Blog.
Attention Roanoke Park and Montlake neighbors! Starting at 10 p.m. Friday, May 8 through 6 a.m. Monday, May 11, crews will work around-the-clock with a Temporary Noise Variance on eastbound SR 520 near the I-5 and Montlake Boulevard interchanges.
What to expect
-
Work hours: Crews will work around-the-clock starting at 10 p.m. Friday, May 8 through 6 a.m. Monday, May 11.
- The Temporary Noise Variance will be in effect nightly from 10 p.m. to 9 a.m.
- Crews will start using a vibratory hammer to install support piles near Montlake Boulevard as early as 7 a.m. on Saturday.
-
Work near I-5 Interchange: Crews will drill into concrete to secure traffic barriers and remove lane markings. After crews remove the existing lane markings, they will paint new lane markings on a new ramp for travelers coming from northbound I-5 towards eastbound SR 520.
-
Work near Montlake Interchange: Starting as early as 7 a.m. on Saturday, May 9, crews will install support piles with a vibratory hammer for future ramps and structures. Neighbors will hear noise and experience some vibration when crews install each pile.

Crews will use cranes, a vibratory hammer, drills, forklifts, street sweepers, hydroblasters and large trucks to complete this work. Nearby neighbors will experience increased noise and vibration during construction.
Please note: crews will complete additional nighttime work on eastbound SR 520 throughout the month. We do not anticipate that this work will be loud.
