LYNNWOOD: Alderwood paving project will provide a smoother drive

Graphic of SR 525 between SR 99 and I-405, showing where the construction will take place,

Beginning as early as Wednesday, April 1, contractor crews will begin grinding and repaving about two miles  of State Route 525 in both directions from the Interstate 405 interchange to just south of 148th Street Southwest, as well as eight on-and off-ramps.

The asphalt on this stretch of SR 525 has exceeded its anticipated 15-year lifespan. It was built in 1984 and was last paved in 2004. Removing the old, worn-out asphalt and replacing it will provide a smoother drive and extend the life of the highway.

First closures

  • Alderwood Mall Parkway at the on-ramp to southbound SR 525 will have a left lane and shoulder closure from 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 1 to 5 a.m. Thursday, April 2.
  • Northbound SR 525 from MP 0.00 to 2.30 will have a right lane and shoulder closure from 11 p.m. Wednesday, April 1 to 5:00 a.m. Thursday, April 2.
  • Alderwood Mall Parkway at the on-ramp to southbound SR 525 will be doing traffic control work from 8 p.m. Thursday, April 2 to 5 a.m. Friday, April 3.

Some of this work requires dry weather and it may be rescheduled.

STANWOOD: Southbound I-5 returns to three lanes after fish barrier removal

A highway with wet pavement, concrete barriers, a white car, and trees in the background under an overcast sky.

The weather finally cooperated, allowing us to return southbound Interstate 5 to its usual three-lane configuration Sunday, March 15, just south of State Route 532 (milepost 212) after installation of a new fish passable structure.

Returning southbound I-5 to three lanes represents a second significant milestone for the I-5/Secret Creek Fish Passage project, which is removing three barriers to fish passage along Secret Creek and replacing them with structures that fish can swim through. Northbound I-5 returned to its normal configuration in February.

Now that the I-5 culverts are complete, we’ll begin replacing the culvert beneath Pacific Highway immediately west of I-5. We’ll also rehabilitate about 2,000 feet of the Secret Creek stream bed throughout the project area. The three new fish passable culverts will provide a potential habitat gain of nearly 5 miles for salmon and steelhead along Secret Creek.

People traveling through the area should continue to expect occasional lane reductions and watch for equipment exiting and entering the highway from the median.

SHORELINE: Northbound I-5 off-ramp, NE 145th Street/SR 523 overpass closed until April

Work on the city of Shoreline’s roundabout project along Northeast 145th Street/SR 523 has the overpass over I-5 closed until March 31, as well as the northbound I-5 off-ramp at that location. This creates numerous traffic changes, including:

  • Fifth Avenue is closed between Northeast 145th Street and the northbound I-5 on-ramp near Northeast 148th Street.
  • Northeast 145th Street is local-access-only west of 15th Avenue Northeast and closed at Sixth Avenue Northeast.
  • Sixth Avenue Northeast is closed at Northeast 145th Street.
  • People traveling eastbound on Northeast 145th Street will need to turn onto First Avenue Northeast or enter southbound I-5.
  • People exiting southbound I-5 at the interchange will have to go west on Northeast 145th Street or re-enter southbound I-5.

Access remains open to Sound Transit’s Shoreline South light rail station, the park and ride and the Fifth Avenue Northeast on-ramp to northbound I-5. People need to use Northeast 155th Street to reach these locations along Fifth Avenue Northeast. A pedestrian detour is in place through the intersection during the work.

On April 1, the northbound I-5 off-ramp will reopen and eastbound-only traffic will be allowed on the Northeast 145th Street overpass. The westbound lanes, along with the new roundabout at the east end of the bridge, are scheduled to open April 10.
