LYNNWOOD: Shaping the future of SR 99 in Lynnwood and Unincorporated Snohomish

Graphic showing area of development for Lynnwood and SR 99

Anyone who has traveled along SR 99 between 212th Street Southwest and Airport Road in Lynnwood and unincorporated Snohomish County knows it plays many roles. It’s a place to drive, walk, bike, wait for transit, and access homes, jobs and local businesses. Balancing all these needs isn’t simple, but it’s important. That’s why the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) worked closely with community members and agency partners to develop a recommended vision for SR 99 in this area. This vision focuses on enhancing safety, access and comfort, especially for people walking, biking and taking transit.

We want to hear from you!

WSDOT is hosting an online open house to share the recommended improvements and learn what the community thinks about next steps and priorities.

The online open house and survey are open from Thursday, December 18 through Tuesday, January 20, 2026. You can explore the study details and take a short survey anytime, it’s available 24/7, so you can contribute when it works best for you. You can participate on a desktop or mobile device and access the open house in multiple languages:

Your input will help us understand what matters most to the community as we move toward design and implementation.

Once the open house closes, WSDOT will review what we heard from the community. That feedback will help shape the next steps for designing and implementing the recommended improvements along this area of SR 99. We’ll share updates through WSDOT’s social media platforms, a blog post, and a listserv.

Draft Study Report

If you would like to learn even more about this study, a draft study report is also available for review. More information can be found in this SR 99 Lynnwood and Unincorporated Snohomish County Pre-Design Study document.

We welcome your comments. Please send comments or questions to Amber Stanley at Amber.Stanely@wsdot.wa.gov. Comments are also due by January 20, 2026.

Stay in touch

There are several ways to stay connected as we continue the study:

SEATTLE: Northbound I-5 upgrades begin, give yourself extra time across the region

Visual showing the area where construction will take place on northbound I-5 in Seattle

On Friday, Jan. 9, we will begin our months-long lane reductions on northbound I-5 to repair and repave the Ship Canal Bridge.

The work will begin with a full closure of northbound I-5 from 11:59 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, until 5 a.m. Monday, Jan. 12. Northbound freeway drivers going to downtown Seattle will need to use exits to Edgar Martinez Drive, Dearborn, James or Madison streets. The express lanes will be open northbound-only 24 hours a day for people going north of downtown. There are no exits from the express lanes to downtown Seattle.

Setting up the work zone requires a full closure of more than 50 hours, so it must be done during a weekend. Our contractor crews will set concrete barrier to create a safe work zone for the people who will rehabilitate the bridge and restripe the two right lanes. The work is weather-dependent and could be postponed for a week if conditions are too rainy.

When the mainline northbound freeway reopens Monday, Jan.12, it will be reduced to the two right lanes until June. Full details of the closure are available on our website.

Express lanes

Throughout the northbound closures and lane reductions, the express lanes will run northbound-only, 24 hours a day for Revive I-5. People traveling on I-5 to or through Seattle may experience traffic delays as the express lanes will not be switching to southbound like they typically do in the morning hours. Keeping express lanes northbound-only allows WSDOT to balance the system during this work.

SNOHOMISH: SR 9 piledriving to begin again after flooding

A crane is assembled under State Route 9 south of the Snohomish River

Piledriving for the SR 9 Marsh Road to 2nd Street Vic widening and bridge painting project is expected to resume as early as January 9, once the work zone is re-assembled and the crane is in place.

This project will:

  • Widen State Route 9 between Marsh Road and 2nd Street near the city of Snohomish.
  • Build a new bridge for southbound traffic directly to the west of the existing bridge.
  • Rebuild the on-ramp from 2nd Street to southbound SR 9 so that it becomes its own lane, eliminating the need to merge into traffic.
  • Restore and repaint the existing SR 9 Snohomish River bridge.
  • Rebuild the overflow bridge, south of the existing SR 9 Snohomish River bridge.
