In this update:
Travelers on SR 520 should plan for several nightly ramp closures between I-5 and Montlake next week. Closures begin at 10 p.m. each night and ramps reopen by 6 a.m. the next morning.
Ramp closure schedule:
-
Oct. 6 & 7: Eastbound SR 520 off-ramp to Montlake Boulevard closed overnight
- Note: All eastbound traffic from I-5 will pay the SR 520 Bridge toll during these hours.
-
Oct. 7-9: Montlake Boulevard on-ramp to westbound SR 520 closed nightly
-
Oct. 8 & 9: Westbound SR 520 off-ramp to northbound I-5 and East Roanoke Street closed nightly
The westbound SR 520 off-ramp to southbound I-5 and the Montlake Boulevard on-ramp to eastbound SR 520 will remain open throughout the week.
Travelers should plan for extra travel time and use alternate routes.
Crews will use the closures to install barriers, relocate light poles, remove trees, clean drains and stripe the roadway as part of the Portage Bay Project.
On select nights from Oct. 5-19, crews will work on and near SR 520 and I-5. Crews will remove concrete bridge barriers near the Montlake interchange, remove traffic striping (if weather allows) and install traffic barriers. We received a temporary noise variance from the city of Seattle for this work because it will be loud, at night and close to homes. We expect this work to be noisiest for neighbors closest to the work zones on the dates noted in the graphic below.

What to expect
- Nighttime work hours are 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
- Neighbors will hear noise from saw cutters, excavators, paving equipment, hydroblasters (high-pressure water jets) and other construction equipment.
- We have shared information on hotel accommodations to neighbors closest to the work.

Back in March, we shared news that we had acquired the property at 2575 West Montlake Place East. This house is located just south of the eastbound SR 520 off-ramp to Montlake Boulevard.
In August, we shared another update that we finalized an amendment to our Section 106 Programmatic Agreement. The amendment allows WSDOT to demolish the house and build an access road to the south work trestle. It also identifies ways to mitigate potential adverse effects. Crews are scheduled to start demolition work, including some site preparation, as soon as the week of October 13.
Demolishing the house will likely take several days. During this work, nearby neighbors can expect:
- Work hours: Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. However, typical working hours will likely be from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- Noise from dump trucks, excavators and other large equipment.
- Intermittent lane reductions in both directions of West Montlake Place East.
After crews demolish the home, neighbors can expect to see additional construction in the area as crews grade and pave an access road from the property to the southeast Portage Bay shoreline. Crews will use this access road to carry equipment and materials to and from the southern work trestle.
You can read our FAQ to learn more about why we bought this house, what happens after demolition and what nearby neighbors can expect during construction.
