In this update:
Starting as early as Tuesday, Sept. 2, crews will resume installing piles in Portage Bay using an impact hammer. This kicks off Season 2 of in-water impact piledriving, which will continue through April 30, 2026.
Typical impact piledriving hours will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends, though crews may work later into the evening if needed. If our schedule changes, we’ll send email updates to keep you informed.
During Season 2, crews will install approximately 50–70 piles in Portage Bay in the orange highlighted areas below.
Through Season 2, we will continue installing piles both on land and in the water on the east side of the project. We’ll eventually connect the temporary work trestle on the north side of the bridge to the haul road from Montlake Boulevard (near NOAA). We’ll also work on the west side of Portage Bay to finish installing piles for the temporary work trestle.
Reminder: Crews will continue impact piledriving on land and vibratory piledriving on land and in water year-round.

Thank you to neighbors who attended our in-person open house last week at Queen City Yacht Club! The WSDOT and Skanska teams appreciated the opportunity to meet with you and talk about what to expect over the next year.
Over 100 neighbors joined us to learn more about:
- Season 2 of in-water impact piledriving from Sept. 2, 2025, through April 30, 2026
- Progress on the temporary work trestles and haul road connections
- Building the permanent Portage Bay bridges and removing the existing bridge
- Upcoming traffic impacts and nighttime construction
If you were unable to attend the open house, don’t worry! You can view the informational display boards online on our SR 520 Construction Corner website.
Back in March, we shared news that we had acquired the property at 2575 West Montlake Place East. This house is located just south of the eastbound SR 520 off-ramp to Montlake Boulevard.
As we noted in our previous update, the house is a contributing property to the Montlake Historic District. That means we needed to consult with our Section 106 concurring parties and the Department of Archeology and Historic Preservation about how we could use the property and mitigate potential adverse effects.
Last week, we finalized an amendment to our Section 106 Programmatic Agreement allowing WSDOT to demolish the house and build an access road to the south work trestle. To mitigate the adverse effects, we took photos and wrote a detailed description of the home’s structures. This will preserve an accurate historic record of the property. We also hired a nonprofit to salvage and reuse some of the house’s architectural elements, such as doors, windows, moldings, etc.
You can read our FAQ to learn more about why we bought this house, what happens next and what nearby neighbors can expect during construction.
