Reminder: Boyer Stairs closed through 2030 for major construction

This past Monday, we closed the Boyer Stairs between Boyer Avenue East and 11th Avenue East for major utility and bridge construction for the Portage Bay Project. The stairs will remain closed for the next five years while crews:

  • Remove the Boyer Stairs to make space for utility work
  • Continue removing select trees and vegetation that conflict with construction
  • Dig a trench for utilities along Boyer Avenue East, the Boyer hillside and East Roanoke Street
  • Install a new water main and move overhead electrical wires underground

Once the utility work is complete, crews will remain in the area to build retaining walls and the new westbound bridge. We will rebuild the stairs in 2030 towards the end of the project.

To learn more, check out the Boyer Hillside Utility Relocation Packet on our Construction Corner webpage for more information.

Montlake Project signage community update

Following concerns from Montlake neighbors about the sign bridges installed at the reconstructed SR 520/Montlake Boulevard interchange, WSDOT worked with community members to identify alternative sign structures. Skanska, our Portage Bay Project contractor, will be procuring and installing the new structures.

Skanska recently submitted an order to the supplier. We expect the structures to be delivered and installed in the first half of 2026. We will need to close Montlake Boulevard to take down the old sign bridges and install the new ones. We are working on traffic control plans with the city of Seattle for that work. We will continue to keep the community updated once we have a firmer timeline.

SR 520 Program e-newsletter change

The SR 520 Program has historically had two separate subscriber lists for our email newsletters. Now that we’ve entered the last major phase of the SR 520 corridor improvements, we’re combining them into one. This will help avoid confusion and prevent duplicate emails.

Going forward, updates for this newsletter will focus on construction activities related to the Portage Bay Project. Most of the roadway closures will happen on SR 520 between Montlake and I-5 (on the Portage Bay Bridge), and some nearby city streets. The project allows for some full closures of the SR 520 floating bridge across Lake Washington (either one direction or both), but they will be limited.

If you no longer want to receive regular construction updates about the SR 520 Program, you can unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of this email. You can also manage your preferences at any time. For the latest construction and closure info, you can always visit our Construction Corner webpage and follow us on social media (X and BlueSky).
