In this update:
We’re sharing an early heads up about a planned weekend closure of eastbound SR 520 between I-5 and Montlake Boulevard in Seattle. The closure begins at 11 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 22, and continues until 5 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 25.
All traffic heading east on SR 520 to cross Lake Washington will need to access SR 520 from the Montlake neighborhood or take alternate routes across the lake.
Crews will use the closure to remove barriers on the existing eastbound off-ramp to Montlake. This will create space to begin building a new, temporary off-ramp eastbound that drivers will start using later this year. Crews will also pave a new, temporary on-ramp from northbound I-5 to eastbound SR 520 that drivers will begin using in 2026.
Westbound SR 520 and the SR 520 Trail will remain open during this work.

On Monday, Aug. 18, we will close the Boyer Stairs for five years and begin several major construction activities near Boyer Avenue East and East Roanoke Street. We recently distributed an informational packet about this work to nearby neighbors. You can read it here on our Construction Corner website.
Over the next six months you can expect to see crews:
- Closing the Boyer Stairs for five years to make room for our utility work.
- Removing trees and vegetation in conflict with construction.
- Digging trenches for utilities along Boyer Avenue East, the Boyer hillside and East Roanoke Street.
- Installing a new water main and burying the existing overhead electrical wires underground.
- Closing some lanes, sidewalks and streets as needed.
Join us tomorrow, Aug. 7, from 4-6 p.m. at Roanoke Park to meet the project team and ask questions about the Boyer Stairs closure and upcoming utility work.
