In this update:
We’re excited to share that all the major elements of the Montlake Project are now complete and open to the public. This includes:
- A safer and seismically stronger eastbound bridge, parallel to the completed westbound bridge, connecting Montlake to the new floating bridge
- A three-acre landscaped lid and 73-foot-wide bicycle and pedestrian bridge over SR 520
- Transit and carpool lanes across Lake Washington, direct-access transit and carpool ramps on the Montlake lid and added lane capacity at the Montlake Boulevard interchange
- Almost one mile of new trails for bicyclists and pedestrians connecting Arboretum trails with routes in Montlake and the University District
- New systems to treat stormwater runoff from the highway
- Removal of old SR 520 on- and off-ramps and the never-completed R.H. Thomson Expressway "Ramps to Nowhere"
With construction on the Portage Bay Project underway, we made the short video below to celebrate and thank some of those who helped bring the Montlake Project across the finish line.
Note: While major construction is finished, you may still see crews around completing smaller tasks from what’s called a punch list — a final checklist of items that ensures the contractor has met all project requirements. This might include things like installing a pole on Hamlin Street or reconstructing ADA ramps. Graham, our contractor, will also maintain landscaping for the next three years. You can read our blog to learn more.
We appreciate your support and hope you’re enjoying the improvements!
