Important update for on-land impact piledriving in Portage Bay

Important update for on-land impact piledriving: July 3, 2025

Hello neighbors,

Several weeks ago, we shared our plans to begin on-land impact piledriving by the Montlake Boulevard and SR 520 interchange between June 12 and July 3. Unfortunately, crews discovered an unknown underground utility conduit while installing piles and they had to temporarily stop their work for safety reasons.

To stay on schedule, we plan to install the three remaining on-land piles next week between Monday, July 7, to Friday, July 11. We will keep you informed through our email updates if we need to complete any additional on-land impact piledriving this summer.

What to expect

  • Work will happen Monday, July 7, through Friday, July 11
  • Work hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

What we’ve completed so far

Crew have installed 14 of the 17 piles we need to support our work trestle and the new temporary eastbound SR 520 off-ramp to Montlake Boulevard. We’ll install the last three piles in the same area we’ve been working (highlighted below in red).

Don’t forget: Vibratory piledriving continues year-round

Throughout the summer, crews will continue installing piles in Portage Bay using a vibratory hammer. They'll drive piles as deep as possible and then return in Season 2 to finish the work using an impact hammer. 

Season 2 of in-water impact piledriving work begins September 1, 2025, and continues through April 30, 2026.
