Historic photos of SR 11/Chuckanut Drive from the WSDOT archives
After one of the largest rockslides in recent memory, State Route 11/Chuckanut Drive is officially back open and just in time for summer.
An April 22 slide dumped more than 3,600 tons of rock onto the highway, including 15 to 20 boulders the size of SUVs. It also took out 100 feet of guardrail and left a 16-by-17-foot rock teetering above the road. WSDOT geotechnical engineers assessed the slope, and contractor crews scaled it to remove loose rock and install anchors to stabilize the hillside.
Crews also used the closure to complete additional slope work a few miles north, addressing another problem area from a slide last fall.
Chuckanut’s curves and views are iconic, but they come with geological challenges. Now that she’s reopened, we hope you’ll enjoy the drive and take in the scenery with a little extra appreciation for the work it took to get her back open.
We’d like to give a special thank you to the residents, local businesses, and their patrons who navigated the closure with patience and understanding. Your support made it easier to complete this emergency work efficiently, and we appreciate your flexibility during a tough stretch.

We often have special events and roadwork taking place in the Northend, including construction projects, maintenance and repairs. We always try to minimize any effects to travel, but sometimes it is necessary to close a lane to do the work or create a safe work zone for our crews.
While we aren't doing a lot of roadwork this week, our crews will still be out monitoring and keeping the roads safe. If you spot them, slow down and give them space to work! A huge thanks to our crews for all their hard work.Â
