Send in the cones: You’re probably going to encounter roadwork this summer

Grab your popcorn and your alternate routes: It’s summer blockbuster season. Except our blockbusters involve busting literal blocks. They also involve lane reductions, detours, delays and – occasionally – some drama. Coming to a highway near you.

Let’s get this out of the way: If you’re heading to a game, festival, concert, Great Aunt Tilda’s across the state…you’re almost certainly going to encounter road work. Yes, even during that MAJOR EVENT you circled on your calendar months ago.

If you feel like you’ve seen this movie before, it’s because the past few summers have been packed with roadwork. This summer will be especially tough with bigger projects spread out over more parts of the state.

2025 construction season picks up after July 4 Weekend in the Northend

2025 Construction, WSDOT North

Here's the thing, you will likely encounter roadwork in the Northend this summer, more than last year. Do your homework, plan ahead for big events, give extra time, stay tuned for the highlight reels. Here are the upcoming projects in the Northend:

6. I-5/SR 20/SR 11/SR 539 – Northwest Region/North and South Strategic Pavement Preservation

17. I-5 Secret Creek Fish Passage (ongoing)

18. I-5 Tributaries, Friday, Lake, Chuckanut Fish Passage (ongoing)

19. SR 542 Bagley Creek Bridge – Bridge Scour (begins July)

20. I-5 SB Nooksack River to Blaine – Paving

We’ll have 117 major projects around the state this summer! Read more about those projects here: wsdotblog.blogspot.com/2025/06/send-in-cones-youre-probably-going-to.html

Construction, maintenance and special events

Road work ahead

We often have special events and roadwork taking place in the Northend, including construction projects, maintenance and repairs. We always try to minimize any effects to travel, but sometimes it is necessary to close a lane to do the work or create a safe work zone for our crews.

While we aren't doing a lot of roadwork this week, our crews will still be out monitoring and keeping the roads safe. If you spot them, slow down and give them space to work! A huge thanks to our crews for all their hard work.
