Plan ahead! Limited impact on-land piledriving begins next Thursday, June 12

Starting Thursday, June 12, crews will begin installing 17 piles on land using an impact and vibratory hammer. These piles are located on the southeast end of Portage Bay, near the Montlake Boulevard and SR 520 interchange. This work will happen on weekdays and continue for at least three weeks.

You may still hear or feel this work even if you're outside the red circle in the above map. If you have questions, call our hotline at 206-319-4520.

What to expect:

  • On-land impact and vibratory pile driving
  • Work will happen on weekdays, June 12 through July 3 (we expect work to be complete before the 4th of July holiday weekend)
  • Work hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

These piles will support the south work trestle and a new temporary eastbound SR 520 off-ramp to Montlake Boulevard, where traffic will shift later this year.

Don’t forget: Vibratory piledriving continues year-round

Throughout the summer, crews will continue installing piles in Portage Bay using a vibratory hammer. They'll drive piles as deep as possible and then return in Season 2 to finish the work using an impact hammer.

Season 2 begins September 1, 2025, and continues through April 30, 2026.

Portage Bay Project: Important in-water safety reminder

Summer is fast approaching – meaning more sun and more heat. But while the weather may change, our safety measures have not. As a reminder: Portage Bay is an active work zone. Jumping off the bridge or swimming by the work zone is strictly prohibited.

Here are a few safety reminders to keep yourself and our crews safe:

  • Stay at least 100 feet away from the active work zones.
  • Do not climb or jump on the work trestles. The work trestles are not safe for the public and the Portage Bay water is shallow. Jumping can lead to severe injury.
  • Use the open navigational channel marked with green and red buoys if you are traveling through the area. Note that the navigational channel is about 15 feet wide with 10 feet of vertical clearance under the Portage Bay Bridge and work trestles.

Thank you in advance for helping us keep the area safe.
