Reminder: Travelers could see miles-long backups on southbound I-5 in Thurston County June 2-3

GRAND MOUND – Daytime travelers who don’t change their plans could see seven-mile backups on southbound Interstate 5 approaching Grand Mound.

Washington State Department of Transportation maintenance crews plan to reduce a two-mile section of southbound I-5 to one lane. Lane closures begin at the US 12 ramp to southbound I-5.

Southbound I-5:

  • 6 a.m. to noon, Monday June 2 and Tuesday June 3 near I-5/US 12 interchange.

During the lane closures crews will fill gaps in the surface of the roadway and fix potholes.

WSDOT needs help from travelers:

  • Consider rescheduling discretionary trips.
  • Travel before or after work hours.
  • Add two hours of extra travel time.
  • Check the vehicle’s tank or have a fully charged vehicle.

Crews need warm and dry conditions to perform the repairs. The repairs will help reduce the rate of deterioration on the roadway.

All work is weather dependent and could be rescheduled.

Real-time travel information is available from the WSDOT app and WSDOT Travel Center Map. Travelers are encouraged to sign up for email updates about work on state roads in Thurston County.
