This week, maintenance crews began clearing SR 542 the road to Artist Point
Yep, crews made their way up to the scenic highway earlier this week unloaded their equipment and started pushing snow!
A long road ahead (2.7 miles to be exact) to clear, but we're one step closer to the seasonal opening of this scenic mountain pass, the news is sweet music to our ears.
Removing this snow requires repetitive, skilled maneuvering of the dozer and snowblower. We are still a few weeks out from reopening this seasonal closure point and the Artist Point parking lot is still CLOSED.
With the weather getting nicer, this area draws quite a few recreationalists. If you choose to make your way up there, remember, when our crews are present, clearing snow, the road is an active work zone, please give our crews plenty of room to work. Also, consider parking at the Bagley Lake Trailhead. Backcountry recreationalists can still access the Mount Baker Area but do so at their own risk.

We often have special events and roadwork taking place in the Northend, including construction projects, maintenance and repairs. We always try to minimize any effects to travel, but sometimes it is necessary to close a lane to do the work or create a safe work zone for our crews.
While we aren't doing a lot of roadwork this week, our crews will still be out monitoring and keeping the roads safe. If you spot them, slow down and give them space to work! A huge thanks to our crews for all their hard work.
