Southbound I-5 traffic shifts to bypass road early Friday morning, May 2, near Stanwood
STANWOOD – By 5 a.m. Friday, May 2, southbound Interstate 5 traffic (between mileposts 211 and 212) will shift to a new, temporary two-lane bypass road. This bypass is located west of the I-5 mainline near Stanwood and will be used during the I-5, Secret Creek Fish Passage Project.
Beginning at 9:30 p.m. Thursday, May 1, until 5 a.m. Friday, May 2, travelers can expect lane closures and rolling slow downs to support this traffic shift.
The traffic shift allows contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation to make a larger work zone needed to excavate more than 60-feet below southbound I-5 to remove an outdated culvert, which is a barrier to fish passage. Crews will then construct a 35-foot-tall steel-arch structure that will allow fish to swim freely.
Southbound traffic will remain on the temporary two-lane I-5 bypass until early 2026. Northbound I-5 lanes also will shift into the median on another two-lane temporary bypass road later this spring.
Reduced speed limit in I-5 work zone The speed limit will be temporarily reduced to 60 mph within the work zone, and travelers should use caution and remain alert for construction crews.
The temporary speed limit will remain in place while traffic is on the bypass road into early 2026. The Washington State Patrol will enforce the new temporary speed limit. Traffic fines double in work zones.
Expect delays and plan ahead Travelers on I-5 between Stanwood and Arlington should prepare for delays and plan accordingly. People are advised to plan their trips ahead of time and use WSDOT’s resources, including the mobile app and real-time travel map or by checking real-time travel data.
