Cooler temps are headed our way tonight and into early next week. Look for the coolest conditions Saturday morning will be in western Whatcom County. Dress warmly, check on your neighbors and limit time outside. Give yourself extra time when you travel, check our Mountain passes page for conditions if you plan on traveling across the state and slow down, PLEASE.
Reminder: Our offices are closed on Monday, Jan. 20 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Our crews will still be working to keep our roads safe and maintained, please look out for them if you plan on traveling over the three-day weekend. Pay attention and give them room to work!
If you've ever thought of getting an e-bike, we're about to make it a whole lot easier! This April we're rolling out Washington's first ever e-bike rebate program. It couldn't be easier because the discount will take place at the time of purchase and it includes safety gear as well.
After a rigorous bid process, we've partnered with APTIM, LLC, to develop the technology to bring the program to life. APTIM has nationwide experience creating similar programs from Boston to Boulder - and the entire state of Colorado.
Over the coming weeks they will nail down the details, such as setting up a secure online portal to apply for rebates and training participating bike shops.
This program is made possible by $5 million from the Washington State Legislature's supplemental transportation budget and all the WSDOT bike ambassadors who work behind the scenes. Stay tuned for more updates from the Active Transportation Division's Walk & Roll newsletter and the e-bike program webpage.
The final tallies for 2024 are in: Washington State Ferries welcomed nearly 500,000 more people aboard last year compared to 2023. Ridership for the year was more than 19.1 million, up 2.6%.
The lowest number of canceled sailings since 2020 and a big jump in walk-on passengers fueled the rise in annual ridership. The number of walk-ons soared by 224,000, or 5.7%, as tourism and a return to the office for many workers increased substantially. Passengers with vehicles climbed by a more modest 102,000, or 1.1%.
Anacortes/San Juan Islands: Total riders decreased 0.7% from 2023; vehicles remained nearly flat; walk-ons dropped 0.8%.

We often have special events and roadwork taking place in the Northend, including construction projects, maintenance and repairs. We always try to minimize any effects to travel, but sometimes it is necessary to close a lane to do the work or create a safe work zone for our crews.
While we aren't doing a lot of roadwork this week, our crews will still be out monitoring and keeping the roads safe. If you spot them, slow down and give them space to work! A huge thanks to our crews for all their hard work through the holidays.
