In this update:

Westbound SR 520 off-ramp to southbound I-5 closed this weekend – but the second lane finally reopens Sept. 9!

Since removing the second lane of the westbound SR 520 off-ramp to southbound I-5 in 2022 for the SR 520/I-5 Express Lanes Connection Project, the public has made it clear: You want this lane back.

Contractor crews will pave and finally restore that second lane during a weekend closure that starts at 9 p.m. tonight, Friday, Sept. 6, until 5 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 9.

The ramp will temporarily reopen one lane on Sunday, Sept. 8 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the Seattle Seahawks game. The ramp will then close again until the full reopening on Monday at 5 a.m.

What we’ve accomplished since removing the second lane

Crews removed the second lane to safely access the work zone for the new flyover ramp connecting SR 520 to the I-5 Express Lanes and complete construction of the new westbound to southbound ramp approach. WSDOT has worked closely with the contractor to reopen the second lane as early as possible while minimizing project delays.

This involved constructing new retaining walls and utilities and relocating the existing ramp to southbound I-5 to make room for the new flyover – all while keeping a single lane open for the traveling public.

We recognize the public’s interest in this work and will keep you posted about any potential changes to the reopening plan on our social media channels.

Montlake Boulevard closed next weekend, Sept. 13-16

Heads up! There’s big closure in Montlake next weekend. Here’s a breakdown of what’s closed:

  • Montlake Boulevard between East Hamlin Street and East Louisa Street
  • Lake Washington Boulevard between Montlake Boulevard and East Foster Island Road
  • East Roanoke Street between Montlake Boulevard and East Louisa Street
  • All SR 520 on- and off-ramps to and from Montlake, including the westbound SR 520 off-ramp to Lake Washington Boulevard

Drivers heading east on SR 520 from I-5 will need to pay a toll to cross the bridge since there’s no exit before the toll when the Montlake Boulevard ramp is closed.

A signed detour for pedestrians and bicyclists will be in place through the work area. The SR 520 Trail will be open. Local access will be maintained.

Closures will begin at 10 p.m. Friday Sept. 13, and last until 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 16. During this closure, crews will pave and install signals.
