Four-day closure of SR 20 at Olson Creek, milepost 105 in Marblemount, beginning Sept. 9, 2024

SR 20 Olson Creek and Unnamed Tributary to Skagit River Fish passage project

SR 20 Olson Creek fish passage detour

A signed detour will direct traffic to Rockport Cascade Road during the 4-day closure around the SR 20 Olson Creek fish passage site.

Our contractor crews will replace the culvert crossing under State Route 20 at Olson Creek near Ranger Station Road (milepost 105) in Marblemount. The current culvert is a barrier to fish passage and will be replaced with a structure that allows for natural migration beneath SR 20.

  • From 6 a.m. Monday, September 9, until 6 a.m. Friday, September 13 will remove the existing culvert, construct the new stream-crossing structure, and build retaining walls.

Additionally, crews will make roadway improvement, which include paving, striping and installing guardrail and will install other roadway safety items. Give yourself some extra time to get around the closure, a signed detour will be in place.

Whatcom County: Temporary changes to the SB I-5 and Slater Road interchanges

I-5 Slater Roundabout removal

Yep, crews removed the roundabout and installed a stop sign at the southbound I-5 off-ramp to Slater Road on Thursday, Aug. 30.

Plan ahead, give yourself extra time and expect delays in the area, especially as people get used to the temporary intersection configuration. This temporary configuration will remain in place until the larger, multi-lane roundabout is installed in early fall.

Labor Day weekend: Use our maps and charts to plan your travels

Level up your travels by planning ahead and being prepared for an eventful, holiday weekend.

Paint map 8/30/24

While much of our roadwork takes a break for the holiday weekend, the streets will be buzzing with PAX gaming fans, holiday travelers and eventgoers galore. Think of it like a massive dungeon crawl, only above ground and way more traffic.

Taking the light rail can be your secret weapon to avoid traffic dragons this holiday weekend!

Whether you’re rocking out at Bumbershoot, cheering on the Seattle Storm, catching Jelly Roll or banging with Metallica, light rail can be your secret weapon to avoid traffic dragons.

The new Lynnwood Link Light Rail Extension debuts Friday, Aug. 30, connecting Lynnwood to Seattle’s downtown – just in time for your weekend quests. Plan ahead, ride the rails if you can, and enjoy a smooth, stress-free journey. Have a safe and legendary holiday!

Labor Day weekend Charts I-5/Border

To make the most of your weekend and spend less time in traffic, consult our holiday travel charts to determine the best (and worst) times to go – whether by ferry, vehicle, bus, rail, foot, bicycle or plane. This year’s charts include US 2, Interstate 90 and I-5 between Lacey and Tacoma as well as Bellingham to the U.S.-Canada border.

Most construction will pause over the holiday weekend to help limit congestion. We recommend people go early or late and give themselves plenty of extra time. Crashes or emergency road repairs also can add to travel times. And please "Know Before You Go" by downloading our app and following our social media accounts and checking out the Travel Center map.

Do your holiday weekend plans include our ferries?

Labor Day travel is expected to attract more than 300,000 people aboard Washington State Ferries from Thursday, Aug. 29, through Monday, Sept. 2.

To help navigate the Labor Day weekend crowds, travelers are encouraged to download and use our mobile app or visit the WSF website before heading to the terminal.

I-5 Skagit Transportation Study public comment period is now open until Sept. 27

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is seeking input on the I-5 Skagit Transportation Study and invites the public to provide written comments by 5 pm on September 27, 2024.

The study evaluated existing and future forecast conditions on the I-5 corridor through the Mount Vernon-Burlington urban area between the Old Highway 99 interchange at Exit 224 and the Cook Road interchange at Exit 232. The study is the first step towards identifying short--, mid-, and long-term multimodal investments needed to accommodate growth and travel demand in the Region.

Construction, maintenance and special events

Road work ahead

We often have special events and roadwork taking place in the Northend, including construction projects, maintenance and repairs. We always try to minimize any effects to travel, but sometimes it is necessary to close a lane to do the work or create a safe work zone for our crews.

While we aren't doing a lot of roadwork this week, our crews will still be out monitoring and keeping the roads safe. If you spot them, slow down and give them space to work! A huge thanks to our crews for all their hard work through the holidays.

Want more information? Visit our real time travel center, where these projects and repairs can be found on our travel map, and download our app to receive alerts directly to your smartphone.
